“A very beautiful mix of the old and new”
Reviewed 23 May 2014 via mobile

It took me three attempts to see the inside of the Dom, but it was worth it. Most of the city center of Wuerzburg, including the Dom, was destroyed on March 16, 1945 by Allied bombing. There is a great display about this in a small room in the Rathaus.
In old pictures, Before 1945, The Dom is magnificent and in pictures from the 1950s it is still a shell of a building. I think that the restoration does a nice job of recapturing former beauty, incorporating damaged statues, and adding modern design. The modern elements blended nicely with the old and never seemed to jump out and slap you in the face.

“Ostentatious”
Reviewed 9 May 2014 via mobile

It's hard to imagine from the rather plain face on the front just how large and incredibly ostentatious this place is. I stopped counting altars and chapels at four and I'm sure there were others tucked away in this vast structure. It is a classic symbol of the tyranny of the ancient clerics who duped poor uneducated peasants to finance these icons of wealth in the name of God. Anyway the place is beautiful and worth a visit if in Wurzburg.

“A rather new facade”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

My first impression of Würzburg Cathedral was how contrasting its architecture was. From one side it was a medieval structure fitting for a building completed in 1045, twin spindly spires flanking a stout rotund center. The famous façade usually depicted for the cathedral looked surprisingly new for a building of its age. If one were to stand at the Altemainbruecke, you could stare straight down the street with an unblocked view of this façade.

“Restauration recently very well done”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

The recent renovation was done very nicely in that it was not tried to just repeat what had been built in the time before the damage occured on the second world war. It was done in a modern way, a lot of white, gives a friendly impression . Modern painting and sculptures are integrated very well so there is a clear touch of modernity and not only conservation of the past. We could even listen to a short organ play which was also a nice experience

“Interesting but not well presented”
Reviewed 19 December 2013

Some interesting treasures in St. Kilian Cathedral of Würzburg, but the presentation is rather dull and not really visitor friendly
