we made an evening of it. The wines were a little to dry for us but it was fun and not too expensive either.

It took awhile within the large Burgerspital complex (about a block long on Theatrestrasse) to figure out where to buy their wine. We finally found it and it was well worth it. They have good bottles from 6 Euros, and really good bottles for about 11 Euros. My husband and I bought 4 --2 to drink while on vacation, and 1 each to bring back through customs.
A very nice gentleman let us try about 8 different varietals (all white). We were the only ones there. Though he said he only spoke a little English, we found him very funny and knowledgable about wines!
Oh, and the wine comes in really cool bottles that look kind of like big flasks.

The Burgerspital in Wurzburg is one of those rare places where the quaint atmosphere of the Probierstubchen and the familiarity of the local population with the place mixes with a sharp and efficient modern business without friction. Excellent wines (including dry Silvaner of astonishing depth, refreshing light reds for summer drinking and heavy, but not sickly, Beerenauslese - what we typically call 'pudding wine') are offered for tasting and for sale at reasonably affordable prices. The staff are fully familiar with their product and happy to make suggestions, although communication in any language other than German can be a challenge. These are local people, born into an environment where the art of wine making and wine drinking is cherished. Next door is the Probierstubchen, where you can bring your own snack and sit on benches drinking Burgerspital wine, while watching the regulars chatting away. There is also a fairly modern wine restaurant in the for the area typical high-quality rustic decor. Locals go there pretty much on all occasions, from a quick glass of wine after morning church, a substanital lunch, afternoon tea, evening meal or wine and snack after a visit to the theatre or cinema. Tourists can also be seen there, although the stroppiness of most staff, to the locals contributing to the unique character of the place, is something one has to get used to. Formal wine-tasting can be arranged, as well as guided tours of the buildings, cellars and history of the Burgerspital, which, founded as a hospital and home for the infirm and elderly for the citizens of Wurzburg, used land for wineyards to provide sustenance for the people in their care.
