To my surprise the single room I had booked well in advance turned out to be almost a suite of about 25 square metres, with a double bed, a couch, two armchairs and a large desk. The furniture was of a kind of colonial style and although apparently quite a few years old it showed only relatively minor traces of wear. The wardrobe lacked partitions for placing clothes and was not up to the standard of the room.
Although the room was brightly lit, this did not apply to the desk, where the lamp was simply too weak for reading. My room was equipped with an air-conditioning, but I cannot report on it, because it did not make use of it during my stay in late April. About 70 TV channels in several different languages should satisfy most guests. Moreover, even a local newspaper was provided free of charge every day as well as a portable water boiler along with tea-bags. WLAN access was available at a moderate fee of 2 euros per hour.
The bathroom was rather small. This would not be a problem if the space available were used more intelligently. So there was only very little space around the basin for placing toilet articles. Another minor nuisance was the fact that the height of the shower head could not be adjusted.
Traffic at Neukoellner Strasse is heavy even at night. However, the sound-proof windows reduce the traffic noise to a still clearly audible, but acceptable level. While the mattress was perfect, neither too rigid nor too soft, the horrible pillow outweighed this advantage and reduced sleep quality considerably.
A positive surprise in Hotel Aviv was the breakfast buffet. Its price of 5 euros is a real bargain. Hotels in Berlin usually charge more than twice as much. Not only the variety of the food available at the breakfast buffet was impressive, but it was also nicely decorated and presented. Only the so-called fresh bread was disappointing. However, this is something one can live with in view of the low price of the breakfast.
Since the staff was friendly and also helpful to a colleague who had to face a problem and since cleanliness was alright as well, I had a decent stay a Hotel Aviv.
