The best hostel I've stayed in. In the centre of Friedrichshein. Many restaurants and shops close. The impressive Karl Marx Alle around the corner. The hostel was modern with balconies and cooking opportunities. Clean and tidy. Check out flea market on Sundays.

Room Tip: If you want it to be quiet-choose backyard. If you want balcony-choose street.

Lohwasser is a great little 'pension hotel' in Berlin Friedrichshein, only a few meters away from one of Berlin's most vivid boroughs ("Kiez" in German) around Boxhagener Platz and Simon Dach Strasse in Friedrichshein. F'hein is Berlin's next Prenzlauer Berg, its cool, its lively and this area is probably Top3 place to hang out together with Bergmannstrasse, Kreuzberg and area round Oderberger Strasse & Kastanienallee in Prenzberg.
Lohwasser is great, rooms are top notch, stylish, clean, you have possibility to use the kitchen on the ground floor, there is a terrace with room to leave tour bicycle (essential for Berlin).
The only backside is that if you have a room toward the street it can be little louder during weekends in the summer months. Everything else is just perfect.

Heinrich's a little creepy and manic-depressive from time to time. He's a clean freak and will act passive-aggressive toward you if you don't wipe down every spot. He'll sort through your garbage to make sure nothing recyclable is thrown away and therefore he knows (quote) "all your medications and what your lifestyle and diet is like." Staying for a little while should be fine but I wouldn't recommend much longer.

We enjoyed a very nice weekend stay at the Hotel Lohwasser. The room we had was very nice with garden view and bathroom. All the hotel is very stylish with simple but nice decoration. We definitely recommend it for a stay in Berlin and we'll be happy to come back in summer!

Hotel Pension Lohwasser is a fantastic find in one of the world’s great cities. It is brilliantly located in the heart of the lively Friedrichshain neighborhood near Boxhagener Platz, within easy access to all other parts of the city (closest U-Bahn Frankfurter Tor) and to all the local eateries, galleries, bars, shops, etc... It is run by the congenial Heinrich Lohwasser who makes all his guests feel welcome and at home. He’s very helpful and will provide all sorts of advice, indications, recommendations and make whatever taxi and other travel arrangements one might need. The building is brand new (HPL opened in May 2009) and plans are underway to develop the back garden into a lovely and usable outdoor space. The rooms are spacious, clean and well designed with (wonderfully cozy) underfloor heating, soundproofing and light blocking blinds. The beds are firm, but comfortable. The bathrooms are huge, with slate floors that heat up beautifully, and excellent water pressure. The room we used (#1) is totally handicapped accessible. The prices for the rooms are great: winter prices of €50-€55 per night for rooms with private baths, and less for shared baths. There is also an apartment for €70-€120 that accommodates 2-6 persons and single rooms with shared bath from €30 per night as well as a triple room for €15 per person per night. Prices go up slightly for the summer. From the entrance, guests enter into a communal space with a small front desk, comfy sofas, kitchen/cooking area, seating/eating area with finally the garden in the back. Guests are welcome to use the kitchen facilities and/or may arrange for a breakfast (but there are plenty of other options, including lots of yummy bakeries nearby). Wifi is free, of course. The hotel is great for independent types. If you require constant attention from the front desk or room service, this place is not for you. If you love feeling like you’re living somewhere new, rather than just being a transitory guest, then you will love HPL. We very much look forward to returning to it.
