“Clean, comfortable - helpful staff”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

Situated in trendy Kreuzberg, the Matzbach was clean and comfortable - and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Though not large, our room was fine and overlooked a local square - where a flea market took place on the Saturday and Sunday mornings. The hotel is tiny, only six rooms, and sits above the restaurant of the same name and a bustling market hall. The former provided two good meals and there was a great little French coffee bar in the latter which we used for breakfast - the best croissant outside France! Don't worry about location - we found it to be very quiet. The underground is a five minute walk away and connections to the airport and the centre - both of the old East and the old West - are simple. One thing to note; there are some good restaurants within walking distance but you need to book.

I was contacted by the Hotel about a booking enquiry to say that everything was fine and I should go to the hotel the following morning. When I went to the hotel I was told that my booking 'was not possible'. These people are time-wasters who obviously are doing so well that they can afford to insult potential guests. Avoid this place.

The hotel is not bad, the rooms are not very big but we had a nice balcony overlooking the square. In my opinion we paid too much, especially if I think that breakfast was not included. The area is not super central but is really nice, elegant and with many cute shops and restaurants. close enough there is the metro stop.
Careful with the payment: they do not accept Visa, and by the website you cannot find it out.

We were very confused upon arrival when the taxi driver dropped us off in front of a marketplace. It took a bit of exploring to find the hotel, which is actually inside the restaurant, you check in at the bar. The people were very nice and welcoming. There are less than 10 rooms, and while they are small, they were nicely decorated. I was displeased by the lack of a phone in the room, I thought that was a common hotel fixture, but maybe not in Europe. We also had no internet access. Our main problem was that our radiator was not working. It was below freezing outside and barely warmer than that in our room. It is because of this I give the hotel a bad review. We inquired about the radiator twice and the first time was assured our room would be "toasty" when we returned. It was more like stepping into a meat locker. I went down stairs a second time to tell them it wasn't working and they came and looked at it and said make sure you tell them when you check out that it isn't working. That's nice, but did us no good as we huddled together for warmth. One man did make and effort and scrambled to find blankets. The 3 fleece blankets helped a little but not much. The ridiculously cold room kept us up most of the night and made trips to the bathroom seem like a trek across the arctic tundra. When you have to take a blanket with the bathroom with you to the bathroom, that's a pretty bad sign. If I had the option, I would have stayed somewhere else. I believed we should have been moved to another room or at the very least compensated for the room.

We were invited to a wedding in Berlin and stayed at the Matzbach as we were recommend by the wedding couple, who were also staying there. Matzbach faces a small square in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin, which is probably one of the most chilled out areas of town to stay in as it is fairly stress/tourist-free yet packed with bars and restaurants, all within walking distance, boasting a wide range of international cuisine.

The hotel offers 6 rooms, half of which come with a balcony, which are located right above the restaurant. The rooms are decent size, come with a shower room (no bath), tv and safe. If you are staying for more than 2 nights, do remember to ask the staff to give you extra sachets of body wash and shampoo, as they only give you just enough to survive 1 or 2 days.

Our stay coincided with one of the warmest weeks of the summer and with no air con in the rooms it meant that we were still sweating throughout the night despite having the windows open! That also meant however that we were able to maximise the time spent on the outdoor terrace, which seemed to be open as long as there were customers. Recommended to anyone who is not after a lot of luxury but just a little place to chill out and rub shoulders with the fashionable locals.
