We visited this bar because it was close to our hotel and the open, comfortable-looking seating surrounding the bar looked inviting. We expected it to be rather pricey, which it is, but we didn’t expect to have unwanted and inappropriate bar snacks foisted upon us. We ordered a nice cold beer and a glass of wine. There was a good choice of wines. We had eaten at a local restaurant and so didn’t order food. We sat outside on what are comfortable couches and chairs overlooking the Inter-Continental Hotel of which Marlene’s is a part. One of the bar staff brought us bar snacks which included olives in a dressing, some crisp-type nibbles and, rather bizarrely, what looked like a pile of thinly sliced ham. We said we did not require, nor want, such snacks and requested politely that they be removed from our table. The waitress replied that “it’s the system” here and, leaving the offering on the table, walked away. As one of our party is a vegetarian, and both of us had eaten, we found this rather peculiar, wasteful and a little unpleasant. A couple of strawberries arrived, which was a nicer touch but wholly unnecessary. Thankfully, a more sensitive waiter arrived later on and, following another request, removed the ‘snacks’. The bar would do better to leave out the inappropriate offerings and reduce its bar prices. In our view this bar is over-rated.
