Tempelhofer Park has recently been saved from development and no wonder so many Berliners want it to stay as it is, a vast green lung in Berlin. The housing shortage will have to be resolved another way but not by building on the old airport. There is an entrance really close to the S Bahn stop at Berlin-Tempelhof and from there the huge expanse opens up. We spent a couple of hours walking around, beautiful sun meant there were lots of people but the park is so huge that they are all accommodated easily.
Bikes, skates, kites, Segways, plus weird contraptions that you can hire are in abundance and ideally suited to the vast runway tarmac. We saw two buzzards and the sound of birdsong is everywhere, there are protected meadows between the runways. The vast old airport buildings are ranged across one side and are often used for concerts and exhibitions.
Bring a picnic, stay for a while and make the most of this wonderful meadow-bike-track-dog walking-birthday-cake-cutting-BBQ-family-friends-bird-spotting prairie of a place. Every city should have one.
