Topography of Terror is a good place to get an overview of the horrors of Nazi Germany, including enough German history to provide a context for Hitler's rise to power. There are also individual stories so that the general experience is personalized.
The museum is right next to a remaining portion of the Berlin Wall, a section along which the East and West were, quite literally, a stone's throw apart.
The museum has extensive information and is free, so you can spend as much or as little time as you want/need.

My daughter said I must visit. She was right.
On the rubble strewn site of the former SS Headquarters flanked on one side by a portion of the Berlin Wall, it evokes such horrible history and does so in a chilling but not macabre fashion

“Loaded with history memories”
Reviewed 15 May 2014

An information centre built on the ex - site of Gestapo headquarters. You will learn what you have already picked up from history of the WW2 and many other things in every detail- From the Great Depression of 1929 until the end of the War. It will definetely make you think and put things in perspective. Given that the presented information is related to one of the darkest moments of European History, thus not the most amusing thing to do in Berlin, you might decide that is better to learn about the whole thing in another visit. This is what I've done. After two full hours reading and learning I walked out to enjoy the mild autumn weather in nearby Potsdamer Platz!

“Informative and heartbreaking site about the rise and fall of the Nazi”
Reviewed 15 May 2014 via mobile

There are no entrance fees, so you should not skip this one if you are on a budget.
The site is quite large: you will find a part of the Berlin wall, the museum itself and several other spots were important buildings that were used by the Nazi used to be (you need to walk around the site and read the signs and imagine the rest :-) )
The exhibit itself is really informative and extensive: it covers the period of time between the rise and the fall of the Nazi, illustrating the impacts on the German people
It adresses a more adult public
