Owner description: Used as a commercial and military transport center before World War I, this famous town square, which was trapped in the no-man's-land next to the Berlin Wall during the Cold War, is currently under construction to become once again one of Berlin's chief commercial centers.

Potsdamer Platz is an ultra modern location to enjoy New Years Eve. Between the throngs of intensely drunk tourists and the fireworks ricocheting off of the skyscrapers it is truly a metropolitan paradise.

In the 1920's, Potsdamer Platz was the bustling center of Berlin. During World War II, it was bombed into rubble. During the Cold War the dividing line and later the Berlin Wall ran right through it. Now it is an ultra-modern steel and glass complex that makes it seem like a cross between a shopping mall and corporate theme park that it is. Outside is a remnant of the Berlin Wall. The restaurants are overpriced

I know this is supposed to be a symbol of the new Berlin, but it left me cold.

As all have said - an impressive new square with ultra modern buildings such as the Sony Centre and Panorama Punkt and of course the U-Bahn stations. However,if you are looking for a quick snack or lunch, ignore the more expensive options and head for the Arkaden Potsdamer Platz. The Arkaden is a three storey shopping mall with an entrance off AltePotsdamer Str. (I think there are also other ways in).
On the first floor there are four or five food outlets of varying kinds including Asian and on the basement floor there are an even larger number which seem to be the most popular with local office workers, etc.
You are almost certain to find something to suit quickly served and at a reasonable price.I lunched at two different places and both were perfectly adequate. A special mention for the Asian Pavillion where I managed to drop my whole noodle meal on the floor. I was quickly ushered to another table, the mess was cleared up including a waitress carefully wiping a noodle off my shoe and I was brought a complete replacement meal without charge.

You can see a double row of bricks going across the street to signify where the original Berlin wall was. There are very modern buildings and we took a very fast elevator to the top at Panorama Punkt, where we could see all of Berlin. I think it cost the equivalent of $5. or maybe 5E.
