“Quality Hotel, superb city”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 September 2009

My wife and I stayed for a long weekend at the Hilton Berlin in August 2009. Managed to get quality room for £100 per night (via Thomas Cook) which was amazing considering the World Athletics Championships were taking place at the time.

The hotel was of the standard you would expect of The Hilton - expansive and impressive foyer with helpful multilingual staff. The room was fine, plenty of space, clean, and a shower that did not need Stephen Hawking to understand the heating controls. The only bizarre thing is that you have to use your room key to activate the lift and it seems a bit temperamental and totally impractical if the lift is full. They need to scrap this idea, which I presume is rooted in the need for security. The bar and restaurant were fine, with hot roasted peanuts served with every drink. Nice touch.

We arrived before lunch but rooms were available. The location is excellent, on a relatively quiet street but only a short walk from main attractions and the entrance to the underground trains is right outside the hotel. Needless to say the German trains are punctual and clean.

As for Berlin, superb city, plenty of recent history and the added bonus of the World Athletics Chamionships, with prime viewing for the men's and ladies' marathons. Unlike some Latin countries, no thieving ******** trying to get your wallet / purse (at least not obvious ones, and no reports of any problems from fellow guests). The beer was exquisite but there was a shortage of restaurants / bars in the city centre open on the Sunday.

Superb hotel, quality stay, would go again.

During August I stayed first at the Mercure Checkpoint Charlie for 7 nights, and then moved to the Berlin Hilton for the last 3 nights. So a comparison may be in order.

They are seven minutes walk away from each other - Checkpoint Charlie to the Gendarmenmarkt. Both are excellent central places to stay with convenient U2 and U6 S-Bahn at hand.

Halfway between the hotels lies a good and well-stocked supermarket (Kaisers at north side Friedrichstrasse 60).

The Mercure was a very welcoming hotel (and my warmest thanks to Liese and her colleagues for making it so). I had an internal room onto the treed rectangular
courtyard; very quiet, with a pleasant balcony. The move to employ an Italian architect of note to design this hotel has certainly paid off: this was one of the
most memorable hotel rooms I have ever stayed in, so beautifully thought out, spacious, relaxing, and just totally right in every respect. And unlike the usual
cramped shower, the wet room was all a shower space should be. But the Mercure chain does need to think hard about not providing what is now taken
for granted: bath-towels (necessary after an evening shower), toiletries (of which no shampoo, nothing), and bottles of mineral water. And the old TVs, which need upgrading, detract from the overall experience.

I cannot comment on the food as I did not pay for breakfast, and cannot say that I found anywhere handy for it. As already mentioned in these Trip Reports, the computer at the ready in the foyer in a dedicated area was great to use and invaluable.

To summarise: a great hotel in which to feel at home.

The Berlin Hilton was similarly welcoming, and my warm thanks to Marieka and Rebecca for making my arrival and departure so pleasant. This hotel has a
great setting onto the square, the perfect place to sit in the evening. I had breakfast in the hotel: attractive room (one area looks through onto the
Square) with attentive and pleasant service; the food offered a wide, if not inspired, choice and made a satisfactory start to the day.

Rooms can often mean a quite long walk. Compact and well-designed, I again had a quiet room looking onto a central courtyard with vegetable beds and
glasshouses growing food for the hotel. Good modern bathroom with a proper bath, well equipped with toiletries and bathrobes. But not a room to linger in and read like the Mercure. The lack of a computer for general use has already been
mentioned by others: this is a serious omission for travellers today (we don't all have laptops with us!). To sum up: better location than the Mercure but with a less enjoyable room.

To eat: I ate several times at each of the following:
Lungomare trattoria bar (Spaghetti puttanesca - excellent);
Malatesta caffe ristorante (Pappadelle al funghi - excellent);
Maothai aka Sisaket thai restaurant Mauerstrasse 76 (good lunch offers, overpriced in the evenings and empty).
The two Italian are between the Mercure and the Hilton and reasonably priced.

Guidebooks: if you take no other get Berlin (Everyman MapGuides) from Amazon. Brilliant!

Pergamon: arrive by 9.30am unless you want to join a long queue (no pressure at the other galleries)

Stayed 3 nights. Booked through Priceline and got a very good price. Asked for a non smoking room, and got a room that had been used as a smoking room earlier. We asked for a new room and got this at once. A man came and carried our luggage. We hada rate without breakfast, and breakfast was priced at 25€! We therefor ate breakdfast at the nearby restaurant Lowenbrau! A very good choice for 10€. Hotel is in walking distance from major attractions and U-bahn across the street.

This is the second time we've stayed in the Hilton, Berlin and it didn't disappoint. It is in a great location for exploring. The concert house is right across the road, with restaurants and cafe's surrounding it. Within walking distance of all the major attractions ( the Brandenberg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie etc). The Underground station (stadtmitte), is just outside the hotel. You couldn't ask for more really, with this hotel.

We chose the Hilton Berlin for a five-night stay and it was a wonderful choice. Hilton provides a great class of service and consistency that was welcome at the end of a 16-day trip. We arrived by train and took a cab there only to find a subway stop in front of the hotel! It's an underground stop and so it does not destrop the ambience of the Gendarmenmarkt (plaza in front of the hotel).

Two sets of elevators manage the movement of guests and it never seemed crowded to us. There is a huge breakfast dining area as well, so there was never a wait for our buffet breakfast. We'd pre-paid the room and included breakfast for a very good, low rate.

The room was large for European standards, comfy mattress (twin beds here, but there are other options), two fluffy pillows, great AC, lots of hot water and pressure. We asked for a quite room, away from the elevators and were accommodated. We slept peacefully and it was quiet!

The staff went out of their way to personalize the hotel with friendliness. Rooms were cleaned efficiently and new towels were hung. The sheets were changed each day.

The breakfast was hot and cold, with many choices. One could order eggs made to order at a station, and the line moved quickly.

The hotel was within easy walking distance of all the major sites. Checkpoint Charlie was about 4 blocks, German History Museum 5 blocks, Potsdamer Platz perhaps 8 blocks. It never took us longer than 20 minutes to reach any of these sites. We took the subway once or twice, but Berlin is a great walking city.

There were many people here on business, so the business center was often busy. Even had we found space there, the internet charges are pricey. We bought an hour of internet time for 2 euros at Dunkin Donuts. This access code gives you the freedom to use the internet at any Dunkin Donuts in the city and there were several.

We would definitely stay at this hotel again!

I stayed here for three nights in a junior suite which had two huge windows overlooking the fabulous Gendarmenmark.

This hotel is ideally located for visiting the centre of Berlin. All of the main sights are a short walk from the hotel and if you are not up for walking there is an underground station outside the main door!

After a day out touring the sights, you can relax in the beautiful swimming pool before heading out to dinner.

Stayed in the Hilton for 2 nights. As many travelers have stated, you can not beat this hotel for its location. You are within walking distance of all the sights and you have a U-Bahn stop right outside the door. Its costs EUR2.80 for the train (S-Bahn -S9 and change for U-Bahn) from Schoenfeld airport. The standard rooms are small(ish) and are comfortable for 2 people. However, if your traveling with a children you may have to upgrade to a larger room type as with the addition of a fold out bed, there would be very little space in the room. All in all a nice hotel in a perfect location.
