We spent our last evening in Berlin attending a performance of Mozart and Bruckner by the Berlin Philharmonic. The Philharmonic Hall was a sight to behold--very impressive, as was the full house. The performance of the Mozart was restrained and sensitive. The audience responded favorably to Paul Lewis and was able to get an encore from him before intermission. The Bruckner 7th Symphony is a mystical masterpiece. It was exciting to hear it played by such a huge orchestra in this beautiful space. I was disappointed by the performance of the Berlin Philharmonic, however. I am used to hearing extremely polished and exciting performances in the US. At best, I felt the orchestra performances in both pieces were uneven, and at times, sloppy--especially during group entrances and in ensemble work. By all means, support your music groups back in the US.
