Upstalsboom Hotel Friedrichshain

We got a last-minute deal for this hotel, when our original lodging plans for our family vacation to Berlin fell through. The hotel and the room was comfortable, and the breakfast buffet was really nice with plenty of choices for the whole family. The area around the hotel is a mixture of run down and just getting fixed up. The hotel location is fine, with a nice park just outside, but close to the S-Bahn station there are some rougher-looking people hanging out, which was a bit uncomfortable with kids, even if we didn't really have any problems. To avoid this, you can walk or take the street car one stop to the subway stop at Frankfurter Tor, and go downtown that way. Either way, it is just a few stops to go to Alexanderplatz, very convenient. A few blocks east of the hotel is a street with quite a few restaurants, where we had dinner one night. Overall, the hotel was good and the location was fine, and we would consider staying here again.

Location good for sightseeing as hotel close to local train station, maximum 10 minutes walk. However we had great difficulty finding good restaurants in the neighbourhood, and for this reason only, we would stay more central if visiting again. Neighbourhood somewhat run down and lots of graffiti, but we never felt unsafe. Initially we were in in standard double room. These are quite Spartan including no drawers in any of the furniture. Following our protests that we had not got the double bed that we requested, we were upgraded to a better double room (comfort double) which was much improved with much better furnishings and a real double bed. Probably well worth paying the extra to get such a room. Note that they insisted that in Germany, a double bed means two single beds made up as single beds, and just pushed together.
Breakfast was very good with an excellent choice. Reception staff were very friendly and very helpful with enquiries re transport and sightseeing.
Overall and enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Consider paying extra for the better rooms. The additional cost is approximately €20 per night. Noi...

Stayed here in December with a friend. Nice hotel 10 mins from train U-bahn/S-bahn into central Berlin. Good sized, clean room with pleasant staff on reception. Good choice of breakfast buffet. Nice to stay out of the City centre and in East Berlin for the contrast. 15/20 mins walk from East Side Art Gallery (longest stretch of Berlin Wall).

All you need for an ok stay but nothing more. The hotel is quite old. Furniture is outdated and temperature cannot be controlled (radiators). Although very clean, overall the experience is pretty basic. Avoid the rooms just above the hotel entrance. There are a lot deliveries during the night and they can give you sleepless nights. Good breakfast.

We chose this hotel largely based on its location, as I had heard that Friedrichshain is a good neighbourhood to stay in, and we were not disappointed.

The bedroom was spacious and warm (really too warm!), nice and clean with a good hot shower. Our 'double' bed was two twins pushed together with two separate single duvets which wasn't really ideal but seems to be becoming more and more commonplace in this kind of mid-range hotel. The breakfast is excellent, with loads of choice of hot and cold food, and the extensive buffet is kept replenished nice and late into the morning - till midday at the weekend! - which allows for a good lie-in after exploring the nightspots of Friedrichshain.

We didn't sample the restaurant other than breakfast, but there is so much great choice to eat in the local area that you don't need to. There is also a sauna available for the use of guests.

If I could change one thing about the hotel it would be to introduce some free WiFi. They currently charge 5 Euros a day for a card to use WiFi in your room.

The neighbourhood made a great base to explore Berlin. The surrounding streets are full of nice restaurants, cool bars and cute little independent boutiques. I always felt very safe walking around. Everywhere stays lively well into the early hours, but if you don't wish to make the most of the nightlife, it's worth mentioning that the hotel was never noisy. It's a short walk away from several U-Bahn/S-Bahn stations so easy to get to all the main cultural sights.

All in all, a great place to stay for the price, and we had a very comfortable 4 nights there.

A little to the east of town, this is a good choice for spacious rooms in a 1990s-era hotel (about 200m N of Warschauer Str S-Bahnd). It's got everything you could want, including a reasonable breakfast, although the restaurant only has a limited menu at weekends and service wasn't altogether brilliant the time I was there.
