Centrally located, extremely comfortable and classy hotel. Overlooking one of the prettiest squares in central Berlin, highly recommended

This property has the feel of a well-located apartment block. Reception is in a small common area with seating, so conversations are overhead. At check-in, I had to write out my street name; Sofitels do not seem to have sorted out their computer problem with namesakes. My gold card was recognised, including that I got a room with a small balcony, to the side, away from the roadworks. I did not take up the offer of an upgrade at the weekend.
The small bedroom felt stuffed with electronic gadgetry: TV with remote, sound box with remote, dect telephone (all showing different times). The free wi-fi was appreciated. The bed sagged. I had no choice as to which edge, as one bedside table had the sound box. There was no decent reading light either in bed or at the desk. Light switches were complicated.
The small bathroom was strange. Why such a heavy door? Why a window onto the bedroom? You think your are going to look into a mirror and you find yourself looking at an unmade bed (until 14h one day). A second person would be looking at you on the toilet. Why only one tumbler? Why is the mat so hung that you end up drying your face with it ? Why is the basin dysfunctional?
I was never going to pay 28 euros for breakfast, especially when the website says it is favoured by media types. The room looks cold, all white and staright lines. There are plenty of friendly alternatives eg Leysieffer at 68 Fridrichstr. which does one for 6.40 euros (not weekends).
There is no bar. The adjoining restaurant, which is surely separately run, is likened to a Viennese café. It is no such thing. For a start, it does not do breakfast. One day at 15h30, I went for a coffee with my voucher. All tables, including those on the terrace were set for 'fine dining'. Only two were occupied. The waiter wanted to sit me at a distant counter, facing the wall, but the four places were taken by beer drinkers. Instead he offered a bare table in a service area next to the kitchen. I declined. He started to lead me to an isolated table, but accepted that I could go on the terrace. In case, anybody is wondering, I had come back from events where the dress code was 'smart casual'.
The staff apply the Sofitel practice of saying 'bonjour' at reception and in the corridor. Outside French-speaking countries, this just sounds insincere, and is confusing, especially if you do have French. Drop it !

Great location for the sights and shopping. Great rooms very comfortable and individually decorated. Fantastic gym facilities. Great service very helpful and professional. Restaurant attached to hotel is worth a visit. Opposite Gendarmenmarkt so good for Christmas market. Had a really quiet room looking into the central part of the hotel would recommend.

It is a chain and you defiantly get that bit extra that is being paid for. The room is larger, food is better, location smarter. I really don't mind the next rung down but a rung up is nice.

I struggled slightly to work the room - where to plug in your room card to make the electrics work and failed to find the blackout blind behind the curtains but I think that was the effect of checking in late at night after a long day. Everything is perplexing in that state! Free wi fi would have been nice too. Otherwise could not have been better.

This is a business style hotel - very professionally run and very nicely decorated. The bathroom is lovely and the bed comfy. There's a large, flat screen TV and a music box to play you to sleep. There's plenty of storage space, but the rooms are not overly large.

The location is brilliant - just a short walk from Unter Den Linden and the Brandenburg Gate.

At the time, there was a buy 2 get one night free offer, but the rack rate is high and the breakfast was 28 Euros each. Salomons Bagels, Potsdamer Platz Arkaden is a great alternative, although not that close.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms overlook the internal courtyard. If a view is important (there is a lovely church...

Beautiful and cosy luxury hotel in Berlin. The staff is very polite, but a bit cold.
Poor internet connection.
