When we booked a hotel in Berlin in late December we were spoilt for choice. For less than 100 Euro per night we had a choice of practically every five star hotel in Berlin (including breakfast). We picked the Pullman for what we thought was its central location (which was misguided, as we are not that familiar with Berlin) and great reviews.
We had a standard room which was basic, the only complaint about the room would be the bed - for a hotel which markets itself as 5-star, the bed (two single beds pushed together) is not acceptable. It was fitted with two single sheet sets too.
The location of the hotel was the second major drawback - it was a 10-15 minute walk from the nearest train station and the nearby restaurant options were quite limited. It is not close to the office areas (for business travellers) or attractions (leisure travellers). The gym was under equipped for a hotel of this standard.
Finally, and a smaller thing, the ambiance was quite sterile. Unlike most hotels it had no romance or sense of occasion about it. This lack of character made it harder to gloss over the shortcomings.More
