The Rotes Rathaus is one of those places, which look the same as before WWII, even though it was damaged in the war. It has a very unique look, especially in the neighborhood that it resides in. You can't climb to the bells tower because of the falcons that nest there for the last 6 years, but with special permission you can climb to the roof and have quite a spectacular view even from there. We went up there to film the views especially to the east where once the N. Israel Kaufhaus was located, where today the Nicolai Viertel is.

After a day in Berlin we were conscious that we had eaten far too much cake and junk food. The next day we went to the Kantine im Roten Rathaus and had a tasty and healthy 3 course meal and drink for just over 5 euros. The entrance to the Kantine, which is open to anyone till about 2pm I think, is on the left of the main entrance and downstairs. It's self service and there is always one veggie option. The workers in the town hall eat there too.

We visited this place accidently. We were on our way to see the Berlin TV tower and we stopped at the main entrance. A kind lady employee invited us inside to have a look at the display. It was magnificent and the entry was free.

If the Brandenburg Gate is behind you and you head down Unter den Linden, off to the right as you head to the Alex is a big red tower - it's the Rotes Rathaus or red city hall. Finished in 1869 it was the seat of the Berlin Senate. Yes, it was damaged in the war, but it remained the seat of Berlin's city government until 1948 when the Communists decided they did not want to share power. So the West Berlin representatives left for Schoeneberg and the Communists remained, dividing Berlin's government between East and West until reunification. It's still a working city hall for Berlin and it is beautiful inside. Don't let the big doors intimidate you. Free exhibits inside. A nice place to duck into if you need to dry out or warm up. Good bars and restaurants in the area, too.
