We understand this is the largest conference hotel in all of Germany -- which can handle 2,500 delegates. We had hoped to stay 5 nights at this hotel for a conference. We were told the middle night was fully booked and so we booked the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th nights and found another place for the 3rd night.
Our actual check-in was extemely slow and without any explanation until we were provided a check-in for the 3rd night, which surprised us. She finally told us that we had three reservations - nights 1&2, night 3 and nights 4&5. She told us our wait-listed night 3 room had come through and she had been struggling to find a room where we could stay for the entire 5 nights. That would have been a dream! We cancelled the other hotel for the 3rd night and settled into a rather warm room.

I asked about the A/C the next morning and was told it was half-fixed and would be fully fixed that day. The next morning, the room was about 10 degrees warmer than the outside air, so the A/C was clearly not fixed. Later that day, someone knocked on our door and told us we lost our 3rd night at this hotel, so we had to find another hotel on short notice. Fortunately, this was not hard.

In speaking with other conference attendees, we found that many also had A/C issues so this is a systemic issue. So when we checked in the second time, we insisted on a room with working A/C, which was provided.

Never an apology for non-working A/C nor their inability to manage bookings. Is this a risk that you would want to take?

Room Tip: Be sure to ask about working A/C upon check-in

Stayed at the Estrel recently attending a conference/Exhibition. Good to stay in same place as event.
TV didn’t work, which frankly didn’t bother me. I needed pillows changed, as they were feather, this was done very quickly.
Nice room, good size, good air-con. WiFi worked well throughout. Good gym. Would have preferred better toiletries from a hotel of this standard & cost, rather than the squeezy bottle of soap and shower gel, but that does seem to be a German thing, and it’s a minor grievance.
Very close (less than 5 mins walk) to Sonnenallee S-Bahn.
Excellent breakfast, good choice of hot food, cold meats, cheese etc. Great fresh fruit, and so many different kinds of bread - bread heaven !!
A very good conference hotel.

Nothing really to love sbout the Estrel, apart, oddly, from the wonderful art. Germany's biggest hotel, 1,000 rooms, is a convention centre with rooms and restaurants attached.

And the artworks are easy to miss in its vastness and if you're busy. A gallery it is not.

It is very good at what it does, but be assured that this is a workplace. It is not designed or located to be a venue for visitors to relax in and explore Berlin with ease.

It's located 8k from the city centre, in the South East, in an area where well heeled delegates might find the earthy, often immigrant community it sits in slightly at odds with a major business hotel. I did find a great kebab shop and bar nearby tho.

Sonnennallee is your rail stop. The overground puzzled me. Often dirty, vomit even, several times I saw guys strung out on drugs on the trains during my visit. Maybe thats just the orbital train, the S41/42, the underground works great.

I've been in smaller airports than the Estrel, so you won't be going for atmosphere amongst the eager networkers If you havent got got a lanyard here, you're staff.

Oh and the rooms, efficient as they are, are almost totally devoid of any character. No kettle in the rooms either, a real minus in what's supposed to be a 4* hotel.

But remember, the Estrel isn't about character, it's all about work.

Nice artwork though, much of it beautiful, and some interesting installations and modern sculptures.

Room Tip: not a clue, its a factory.

I'm trying to be restrained in this review because so many little things are wrong but could be fixed.

First, you need to understand that the hotel is on the edge of nowhere. It's a convenient bus ride to Berlin center but it takes half an hour. Same with the trains. The area around the hotel is not rife with dining or shopping opportunities although we did have a decent meal at a local restaurant one evening.

Our room was large and comfortable but the A/C was questionable. The first room we were given did not have any and several other people at the meeting mentioned that had none.

There was no laundry over the weekend and when I missed the 9 am deadline on Monday by 10 minutes I was told I was too late and would have to wait for the following day!

The concierges were often unhelpful although they did sell bus and hotel tickets. At several points when I needed help there was no one at the desk. My wife had more trouble getting assistance than I did even when they were there.

There is no coffee service in the room so you need to go to breakfast. There is also no safe in the room unless you buy a more expensive room.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in Wing 2 or 3. The A/C there seems to work.

We stayed here for a conference. Everyone we talked to had significant room issues. We had too many to list them all so below is just a bit.

Our room was way to hot with the air on full. I called and asked for maintenance to fix it. On my return I found a fan had been left in my room. The fan was broken. I called again and this time maintenance showed up and confirmed the AC was broken. He disassembled the unit and discovered the issue was lack of maintenance. The filter had about 1 inch of crud on it. Easy to fix - he removed the filter!

In apology, the front desk sent up some bottled water. I put it in the bar fridge. Which also did not work. Another call to maintenance to get the fridge replaced. While waiting I got some ice. There are only 3 small machines for the 1,125 rooms. They were mostly empty. It was a 10 minute round trip walk needing 4 elevator rides to get ice. Dumped my ice on my bottled water in the bar sink. An hour later it had all melted and the melt water was also gone. The stopper in the bar sink did not work.

None of the drains in the bathroom drained properly.

Others had water leaking into their rooms and there were multiple cases of staff entering rooms un-announced and catching people in various stages of undress.

The location is very poor.
