Hotel Hackescher Markt

Reviewed 7 March 2013

The location just around the corner from the Hackescher Markt and it's S-bahn station is very convenient to this part of town, which is our favorite part of Berlin. Many restaurants within easy reach (see my other reviews from Berlin) and easy access to other parts of the city.

We had three rooms for me and my husband, my parents and his parents and they were all fine if perhaps a little small. The breakfast was very nice but displayed in a spread out and a little confusing way. I would stay there again.

The Hotel is located close to Alexanderplatz and a host of other attractions. Just a few minutes walk from the train station.
The Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was a buffet style and I thought it was particularly good. It will really set you up for the day.
The room was warm and clean if a bit small. The other slight misgiving I had was that if you get a room at the front of the hotel, the passing trams can be a bit noisy.

Room Tip: If you want more peace, try not to get a room at the front of the hotel.Maybe also go for a bigger r...

A clean and businesslike hotel. Breakfasts were excellent: a range of ham, fish, eggs, fruit, breads, different teas, good coffee etc, all fresh and served until 10:30am which was good. Breakfast was included in our room price.
Staff were helpful and printed out details of local places of interest.
The location is very good: easy walking distance to Alexander Platz, Unter Den Linden, Museum island. Lots of local restaurants.

We booked an Executive Suite on the Courtyard side, but when we arrived at 10:30pm, we were informed it wasn't ready and they put us in a "Normal" room on the street side (405). This was very small indeed: only just space to edge around the double bed, and the bed was against one wall. The next day we asked to move, and the room available was 306, which I think is an Executive Double. This was much better: space to move around the bed, and on the courtyard side.
So all was well that ended well. They responded promptly to our request to move rooms, and we got a satisfactory room (though not the one we booked).

The reason why I've given it 3 stars rather than more is because the way the bed was made up meant there was a rubberised mattress cover right underneath the bed sheet. As a result the bed was very hot and clammy, and quite uncomfortable.

Room Tip: Rooms on Courtyard side are quieter. "Normal" rooms are very small.

Close to a major rail station and easy transfer from the airport, this is a modern comfortable hotel on the fringe of Berlin city centre but at the opposite end to the Brandenburg Gate. The staff were particularly helpful with tourist information. A 5 minute walk will see you in the middle of the main street of Berlin and there is a wide variety of great restaurants nearby

Even though we came ahead of stipulated check-in time we were kindly welcomed and got a room without waiting. This made it possible for us to utilize our limited time (we had only one after-noon) more efficiently. Had booked an executive double which turned out to a reasonably big room with a good, clean and well equipped bath.
The location is great - just around the corner you have Hackescher Markt square with a large number of bars and restaurants and an S-Bahn station from which you easily reach your desired attractions and sights.
The breakfast offered was great. A tasty selection of cereals, meats, cheeses, fruits, and bread as well as hot breakfast on order.

Room Tip: Executive double on third floor.

On arrival we were asked to pay in full for our stay plus an extra 50 euro deposit against any extras we might use. Not even US hotels try this one on. We were also told that breakfast was extra (not clear from our reservation) at 7 euros each.

The rooms were described as having climate control. This turned out to be a noisy fan which we found in the wardrobe and had to plug in. The hotel website emphasises its comforatable beds. What it does not say is that the quilts provided are minute single-sized affairs so you spend all night repositioning it on the bed to keep warm. With the noise of the fan and the quilts we found sleep very spasmodic. To add insult to injury, on one night we were woken up by a 6.30 a.m. wake-up call which we had not requested.

On checking out, the receptionist insisted that the price of breakfast was 17.50 euros each - far too much for the mediocre breakfast which was provided. In no way does this hotel deserve its 4 star rating.

A small boutique hotel in an excellent location a few hundred metres from museum island, as well as shops, cinemas, restaurants and public transport. We booked the standard room which was well set out, well equiped (qood quality mattress, sheets, towels, bathproducts etc), very clean and very comfortable - although not large. The rooms were very quiet, even with the central location. Breakfast was fantastic - a very large selection of high quality cheeses, meats, breads, fruits; as well as a hot breakfast cooked to order. The staff were friendly, informative and helpful (excellent english spoken by all staff). The location made everything easy - I have recommended this hotel to friends as a great base to explore Berlin. Those with reduced mobility should note there is a short flight of stair to get to the reception and lift area.
