Basic but good

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Aug 2017
Just stayed here for four nights. Fantastic location for everything ,close to public transport ,we got a cab from airport on arrival €45 but train back from zoological garden station..ten min walk..€3.70!
Hotel room basic but clean and beds made daily, staff friendly and helpful.
Hair dryer useless so advise taking a more powerful one! Would have been nice to have coffee/ tea making facilities too.
Haagen Dazs parlour a must next door,we didn't stay B and B and found a lovely place for breakfast called Cappuccinos.Lovely visit to Berlin and would recommend here.
Date of stay: August 2017
Room Tip: Rm 312 ok but tiny bathroom and noise at back .

I stayed at the Hotel California for 4 nights in the end of July 2017 holidaying in Berlin. The last time I stayed I was a little disappointed, especially with the breakfast, so I was a little exited as i checked in again.

The check in was very efficient this time. It seems they had my name and details on record, so the paperwork was minimal.

The room was very spacious with a nice double bed, a desk, minibak and chairs and table. It had air-condition that worked well, and itkept the temperature at a nice, comfortable level despite the heat outside and without making any noise at all.

The hotel is located on the Kurfurstendamm not far from railwaystations, U-bahn and bus services. Shopping is very good in the neighborhood wit a lot of stores from leading brands. It is hard to find a better located hotel at a better price in Berlin.

Based on my experiences the last time I was here, I did not have great expectations as I went to breakfast on the fist morning of my stay. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Despite many people eating the staff managed to clear the tables as they were vacated and they were soon ready for new customers. The breakfast buffet was varied with a wide selection of food, and the staff refilled as soon as an item was emptied. All in all a very good experience this time.

The only item that was not to my satisfaction was the stability/bandwidth of the Wi-Fi network provided by the hotel. In my room it was not stable, it came and went, and the bandwidth was not even sufficient to download a few pictures. I think this was particularly bad in my room, as others experienced better coverage in their rooms.

All in all The Hotel California is a hotel that has a perfect location and offers good value for money. I'll be back!

Room tip: At the moment (July 2017) there is work/construction going on in the hotel backyard.

I admit at first I had trouble finding this hotel as it wasn't that very well signposted especially as there was loads of Haagen Dasz signages outside of the hotel due to the ice cream parlour being part of the hotel. Also when I checked in I felt the member of staff who checked me in wasn't the most sociable as part from getting my room sorted out he didn't really have much to say.

However I am really glad I stayed here and will definitely stay here again bar the 1 minor thing that happened which put me off a bit. I will get to that bit later though. The room (which I upgraded to a Superior room) was of excellent standard and more than comfortable for me.

I only upgraded as their Standard rooms did not have air conditioning and I thought that was important for me especially in the summer season. The wi-fi connection was also excellent and the bathroom was also very tidy (bar a tiny crack in the flooring).

One thing that annoyed me a bit was I tried to use the safe to keep my valued items safe but found myself locked out of it and it made me worry and chose to not use it again for the rest of my stay.

Also I was extremely disappointed by the service on my first evening when I tried to visit the Haagen Dasz parlour by the reception. I stood there for a good 10 minutes looking at the flavours whilst two employees were standing there, but were so busy talking to each other they didn't even acknowledge me so I just left quietly.

However looking back on my stay I loved the location of this hotel (even though it wasn't well signposted) as it was right outside a U-Bahn station with many restaurants around. And once again my room was very spacious and comfortable and bar 1 minor issue I thought the staff were very helpful to my needs, especially when I needed a city map and also lost my room keys when I went out one evening.

So therefore far as moneys worth goes I would say this hotel is worth the price as it was not too expensive compared to other hotels I looked at in the city of Berlin. I would most definitely stay here again but would personally recommend not to expect much from the Haagen Dasz parlour in the hotel

When we checked in at three o'clock there was only one person on reception which caused a back log of people. Our room was 424 which was quite a hike from the lifts. Breakfast was really good and the staff were pleasant and very helpful. Overall it was a clean but dated hotel.

Room tip: Room 424 is not good if you have trouble with walking, as there are four left turns from the lifts.
