My wife and I recently spent three nights at this hotel and were generally very satisfied. I booked a 'Privilege' room, but I'm not sure if this is what we got. The room assigned was on the first floor overlooking the main entrance. What was unique about the room is that it was on three levels. A lower level where a toilet and wardrobes were located, a sleeping level with TV and refrigerator and a upper level where the main bathroom (plus toilet) and the 'office' area were located. If I'm one hundred percent honest the sleeping area was a bit cramped. For example I could only walk sideways between the end of the bed and windows and I am not a particularly large person! The room rate I paid included breakfast and I must say the choice was extensive. If I have one gripe it is that the room was too warm at night despite our turning the radiators off. Opening the windows wasn't really an option because of the noise from the street. The hotel has air conditioning, but I was advised that this is turned off in the winter.

Just got back from a weekend in Berlin (Nov 2011) and stayed at this hotel with my boyfriend. We arrived late on Friday night (around midnight) and were told our room was upgraded because it was the last one available (hooray for us!)

Hotel location; PERFECT - very near to lovely area of town, 5 mins walk to U-bahn and super easy to get around. Plus there are some fantastic restaurants nearby - Cha Cha (asian fusion) and another Italian place at Checkpoint Charlie which is also around the corner.

Staff were lovely and friendly - always. Hotel corridors were very quiet even though the hotel was full (we noticed at breakfast).

Breakfast - excellent, large range of fruit, veg, eggs, omelette, cheeses, warm drinks, cold drinks, even pancakes and about 7 different honies to choose from!

Room was lovely and large, could have done with a bit more decoration, maybe a picture on the wall, ok, but who cares?! Also read a previous review that said it looked like all furniture was bought in IKEA - i agree but again, who cares?! All sofas, beds, chairs, tables are all extremely comfortable and also easy on the eye. (And it was extremely clean.. spotless, with complimentary soap, shower gel, shampoo and moisturiser)

Internet being expensive is a load of rubbish - yes if you want to use internet in your room for 6 hours it's 5 euros - but since when is that expensive?? And downstairs the internet and WIFI is free, so take your laptop / ipad / tablet downstairs and soak up the atmosphere of this great hotel.

If we go back to Berlin we will definitely be staying here and no where else.

We had moved from the Steigenberger (see my review--for a room my grandmother would have liked) after three days across town, near Europa-Zentrum/Zoo. Wanted to experience the Mercure Checkpoint to experience the newer Mitte area.,,,see the nearby Currywurst Museum for kicks. The Mercure Checkpoint was right in the heart of trendy modern Berlin....all new, lively and a well thought-out design and use of space.

Our two rooms (my aunt in one and myself-wife-and son, new to Berlin, in the other) were HUGE. There was a modern full bath with excellent fixtures, and a toilet/sink on the other side of the ample room. Lots of built-in closets, shelves we felt like it was an apartment with a nice couch and seating area near the door. A large counter & wall unit occupied the center of the long room, housing the TV and mini-fridge. We kept some wine out on the balcony (it was January and snowy) to chill it before realizing, as we were checking out, that the built-in unit had the refrigerator hidden in it! Overall the atmosphere was great, the check-in/check-out was extremely helpful, and we thoroughly enjoyed the cozy semi-private "nooks" in the lounge downstairs. We felt like it was almost a private livingroom, yet passersby could find someone celebrating, as we were! Listening to Andre Bocelli over a reasonably priced Berliner Weisse (mit Schuss!) in the lounge on a snowy January evening was a truly memorable evening!

Room Tip: very quiet, I hear there is a nice garden but we didn't see it, our balcony only overlooked othe...

I stayed in this hotel for eight nights in November 2011. The room was quite large, spotlessly clean and with a balcony that overlooked a courtyard garden. The hotel is located within a short walk of either the Koch Strasse U6 line or the Stadtmitte U6 and U2 lines. The staff is friendly and attentive. One small downside is that the room could use better sound insulation, as noise from closing doors in the hallway or sounds from adjacent rooms can disturb your sleep.

The hotel was an extremely convenient base for exploring the city. It provides for very easy to access local trasportation and ease get to the main city attractions. Rooms are quite large and very comfortable. There are great options for dining and nightlife close by.

One of the only downsides is that for the room rate wifi and breakfast should be included.

Stayed here for a week in mid- September, 2011. The hotel is located in the Mitte district, in the former East Berlin side of the wall, very close to the old Berlin Wall and the actual checkpoint used when crossing over from the Allied Sector. The location was good, a bit off the beaten path of shops of Friedrichstrasse street (about 2 short blocks away), and the busy tourist corner of Checkpoint Charlie, which made for quiet nights. The hotel rooms are very large, nicely outfitted with large (king sized) bed, sitting chairs and small side table, desk/counter with flat screen TV (3 English language channels, all news stations), and coffee maker with single cup coffee brewing machine with some selection of different coffees (very small cups and strong European coffee). Pillows were very soft feather pillows. Bed covers consist of a bottom sheet and a duvet (down comforter) enclosed in another sheet. Heating system was quiet.

The staff were very friendly. Hotel rooms are very clean, and very solid and quiet - didn't hear any noise at all, except one morning when the hallway (elevator type) music was blasting at 6am. The breakfast buffet is outstanding with a wide assortment of cold and hot foods, and good coffee served by the staff. But it is not cheap (13 Euros), so be sure to eat lots and well to justify the price. One morning when I was rushed I only had a cup of coffee and toast, and it was still 13 Euros! (my fault, should have known to go down the street to the subway and have a coffee for 1 Euro and a pastry for 1.50). There are a couple of restaurants right down the street as well. The food is limited to breakfast at the hotel.

The hotel is a short walk to the Checkpoint Charlie subway (or U-Bahn) - about two short blocks. Another subway station, where two subway lines intersect, is about 4 short blocks away. Both are in relatively easy walking distance, but the Checkpoint Charlie station was our favorite as it was close by and less confusing than the other (StadMitte, which has the two lines, but separated by about a half block).

There is not much of a bar - just a few tables. There is only one elevator (at least in my part of the building) but it is quite spacious and not in heavy use. Desk staff were very helpful in providing directions, calling taxi's, etc. although some staff did not know much about the touristy things (e.g. walking tours, where to rent bikes, etc.). There is an internet computer and printer available for guests to use, beside the front desk. Free WiFi is available in the small lobby and in the breakfast room. Slow, but serviceable connection. Extra fee for the same slowish internet in the rooms, so I just took my laptop with me to the lobby in the evening and to the breakfast area in the morning. I regularly drank water from the bathroom tap, and filled my water bottle daily with no issues (stomach not upset or anything).

I would definitely stay here again, and would recommend it.

Berlin is an easy city to get around in, with the U-Bahn and S-Bahn covering most of the key areas. If you like to walk you easily can walk from the Mercure hotel at Checkpoint Charlie, North to the Gendarmenmarkt (Old churches, & buildings & restaurants), past the fancy shops on the Franzosische Strasse, to the Humbolt University libraries and churches/synagogue, to the Museum Island (Museums, Galleries and restaurants), etc. This covers much of the touristy area. The hotel is only a few blocks away from the "Topography of Terror" exhibition, and the Holocaust Memorial - both free admission, and excellent learning experiences. A short subway ride can get you to the AlexanderPlatz where there are more sights and food options. Also a short and easy subway ride to the PotsDamer Platz where there are plenty of shops, restaurants and malls. And lots of people.

Others have said this is not a 4 star hotel, but I would say it is close to a 4 star in terms of service, room size and amenities and breakfast. I was not disappointed with it.

One other thing - the rate I received was approx $155 per night, but as the weekend arrived the rates jumped to $275 per night, so I moved hotels for the last night to a much simpler and cheaper hotel (Etap Hotel Alexanderplatz) about 10 blocks from Alexanderplatz, ($60 per night), which was fine and clean but very spartan (I felt like I was staying in an Ikea display room!). Very good value if you only want to sleep in your room, although it did have a flat screen TV with Satellite service and more English channels.

Room Tip: I stayed on the 5th floor, with an inner court view and the room was exceptionally quiet.
