“Wonderful building - security staff need customer service training”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

The building is stunningly beautiful with clean simple lines. Unfortunately it is too small to display the whole collection so it is rotated in three parts. I have visited several times in the past. This visit was spoiled by the officious attitude of two of the security staff, such sour manners. However my spirits were lifted by encountering Pippylotti Rist Ever is Over All 1997. I watched this charming video piece with sheer delight and surprise - it really packs a punch.

“How is this art??”
Reviewed 18 April 2014

If you like looking at scribble on paper made by someone swinging back and forth, or the neon sign saying 'war', or the two pieces of scaffolded tiered seating opposite each other (to represent conflict?!?), then this gallery is for you. It's not for me. Don't waste your time.

“Check exhibits before you go”
Reviewed 1 March 2014

The collection in the Neue Nationalgalerie is so large that only one third can be displayed at any one time. The rest will be in storage. Therefore, I strongly recommend you check on the SMB website to see what is on display when you plan to visit.

The building is stunning, it's a real architectural beauty. The stuff inside isn't always so great, however.

As of early 2014, part 3 of 3 is on display downstairs. Enjoyment of art is obviously subjective, but I honestly can't recommend you pay money to see this unless the temporary exhibitions upstairs are of particular interest.

The current permanent exhibition focuses on late 20th century 'art'. For example, you can sit on the floor to watch a video of a cactus being shaved. You can sit on some seats from a sports arena that are facing some other seats from a sports arena and think about what it all means. You can look at some enlarged newspaper clippings about war.

Or, my personal favourite - a large framed picture of grey paint. That's it, a big square of grey paint taking up scarce space in on a gallery wall. If you don't believe this, look at the picture above.

Fortunately, I had an annual membership card for the SMB museums, so I didn't have to pay to see that garbage. There are a few really great pieces in this part of the collection, but they are outnumbered by sort of stuff that makes you wonder how anyone gets paid to create it.

Be aware that there is no reduced price if the upstairs gallery is closed while new exhibitions are prepared. You will still pay full price to see only half the gallery.

“Full of unexplained drivel”
Reviewed 1 March 2014 via mobile

As the title says really. The art is displayed mostly without any information as to it's purpose, which, considering it is modern art, makes it quite unaccessable and confusing. I left after 5 minutes as it all seemed so terribly pointless. Didn't mind too much as had boight an area pass ticket but it wouldn't be worth seeing for a full price ticket. Don't waste your time!

“(Usually) decent collection of modern art.”
Reviewed 28 February 2014

The collection and exhibition varies, but for me has (usually) been interesting, and not too pretentious as modern art can be. Check online to see what's on before you visit. Occasionally the NN will have a dud show. Also, IMHO, the upper floor temporary exhibits are not worth the extra fee.
As always in Berlin, use the 3 day museum pass and save your money.
