“Great Place to think about the History”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

Went back to Berlin the first time since 1984, it was a trip down memory lane for me and a look at the history of this great City. The Olympic Stadium was and is in great condition and was fantastic to walk around and listen to the stories of the place. I enjoyed sitting there and taking in the atmosphere and spent a hour or so wandering on my own. I enjoyed the history of this place and the city in general many great sights here and from both the dark days of the 30/40s and the cold war. Fantastic to see again.

It's funny but of all the places I have ever been this one haunts me. We took the subway train and coming out of the station you would be forgiven for thinking you were trapped in a time warp. As the walk up to the Olympic Stadium unfolds you find every film clip of the 1936 Olympics that you've ever seen replays in your head and you can feel how the theatrical Nazi experience would have affected people. I took photos and when I converted them to sepia it was frightening!

Nowadays there is a local football team who play there so it is still often used. There was a cafe there so we had beer and some German food and there is gift shop. I definitely would recommend a visit, especially for history of sport fans!

“More than just a stadium”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

The whole Olympic Park in Berlin comprises a compendium of Olympic and non-Olympic sports, but it is also, inevitably, steeped in history. The site of Jesse Owens' four gold medals in 1936, the World Athletics Championships and the Football World Cup Finals is more than just a stadium, but the stadium itself is full of character. We opted for the self-guided tour with video and headphones (there was only an English tour at the weekend) but it was good enough to keep us entertained for more than 2 hours as we took in the entire Olympic Park, including the Bell Tower - an extra €4 each but worth it for the views across Berlin and the surrounding area. Only a shame there was not a guided tour in English as I'm sure it would have made this a 5 star attraction.

“Impressive stadium with an interesting history”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

The stadium is quite the architectural masterpiece, but it's the history that I find most interesting. The 1936 Olympics were held here during the time of the Nazi regime. When there's no events on, you can enter the stadium and grounds for a fee, or take a guided tour, also for a fee. Most of the tours are in German but there are a few scheduled tours in English. Book online in advance as tours may sell out. This happened to me and I had to wait 2 hours for the next one.

“Long way out”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

The famous stadium where the 'Nazi' games were held in 1936 is a long train journey west of Berlin. It takes around 30 mins from Potsdamer Platz. Take the S-Bahn 75 or 5 in the direction of Spandau and get off at Olympiastadion. Alternatively U-Bahn 2 or 12. You can marvel at the austere architecture from outside, including two tall towers with the Olympic rings suspended between them. Audio and guided tours are available for €7. Large parts of the stadium have been modernised but there is still enough of its former grandeur to keep architecture buff's happy.
