“New Almodovar Hotel/ Friedrichshain/Berlin”
Reviewed 13 June 2013

A recently opened, (2012) in the Friedrichshain section of Berlin. Easy walking distance to Ost-Bahnhof station. The breakfast buffet, vegitarian, is excellent. The rooms were very clean and quiet. I even used the yoga mats to do me back exercises. I selected the hotel since it was an easy 10 minute walking distance to my son's place, across the street from Schnee-Weiss Resturant; which incidently is an great place for dinner.

I didn't realise I'm such a geek until being very, very impressed by the yoga mat in my room. It almost made me rate this 5 stars. But then there was a lot of noise from the street in the room in the evening, and I couldn't figure out how to make the shower work, so there went the 5th star.

Pluses:
- Very good veggie food at lunch and meeting facilities
- Beautiful rooms with white cotton curtains and wooden floors
- Yoga mat in the room!
- The bed was ok
- The location was ok for a quick evening walk before a day of meetings
- Very friendly staff

Minuses:
- Traffic noise disturbed sleep
- In the morning, also the air conditioning was really loud
- The shower was too fancy, couldn't make it work
- Location would be a bit off for tourists I guess
- The pretty wooden floor was dirty (wouldn't have noticed if hadn't done yoga)
- Staff seemed unexperienced, meeting arrangements were not perfect

We stayed at this hotel in apartman during ITB 3 nights. The hotel is brand new, staff was quite helpfull......rooms are spaceful and nice furnished. Extra bed was really small for two:-(
I propose to focus on better organisation of employee, control of cleanliness.....in the room was little bitte dust and old bag of tea etc.....but I believe that will be better:-)

Almodovar Hotel markets itself as an eco-friendly lifestyle hotel. It is indeed a quirky and funky-looking place with great decor but it's really style over substance. Wooden floors look fab, but are incredibly noisy. I also found that the floors in the room were dirty and dusty, and it shows so much more on dark wooden floors... Attention to detail was lacking, for instance I didn't get a hand soap until after the second time my room was clean. Before that I had to get soap from the shower to wash my hands.
I'm also a little unsure of how eco-friendly the hotel actually is. For instance, there was a 20-page hotel manual in the room (half of it being international call rates) printed on only one side of each page. Surely a truly aware hotelier would ensure that paper-use is reduced by printing double sided?
The breakfast was different and interesting, with lots of little dishes (if you are ok with vegan/vegetarian food). However, many dishes were empty on the 3 occasions I had breakfast and it sometimes took up to 30 minutes before they were replenished.
Bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper as the wooden floors are incredibly noisy, not least the corridors. Indoors slippers may also be a good idea if you want to take your shoes off in the room without getting your feet/socks dirty.

I might be a bit biased, since we where informed at check in time that one of our superior rooms for some reason was upgraded to a suite. The suite was awesome by the way. Very spacious and beautiful. All the rooms comes with a yoga mat! But you will most likely be to busy exploring Berlin to use it much.

The staff is friendly and helpful. Location of the hotel was also very good, Friedrichshain is interesting and central. The rooms came with a complimentary vegetarian breakfast buffet. The buffet was excellent, a paradise if you are vegetarian. I was very impressed with the large selection of juices and teas. The coffee wasn't that great though.

The Hotel is new, rooms clean with very nice furniture. The design and all facilities are consistent to the idea of being environment-friendly... And it makes you feel good. Breakfast is nice with several vegan options and very healthy. There is a mat for practicing yoga in each room.. Shame that the wellness courses and facilities are not ready yet!

Friedrichshain is an up and coming neighborhood in east Berlin, relatively sleepy but friendly atmosphere, not that far from Mitte via the ostkreuz s bahn. This seemingly brand new hotel is waiting for the finalization of its spa, so the prices (around 120€) are currently a bit steep for the neighborhood. It is nevertheless a nice place to stay: comfortable rooms, friendly service, great organic breakfast. Lots of ecodesign elements integrated. A few small points: pillow on bed is a huge thick square, woke up with a very sore neck: worth getting normal size pillows for guests that request these. Sliding glass bathroom doors, limited privacy if you're traveling with friends. No shampoo/conditioner in bathroom. The (free) wifi doesn't remember your password so you have to reenter it every time you use your phone (a bit annoying). But these are minor points, overall a very nice experience.
