We loved the Alex Christmas Market. It's relaxed and has a nice atmosphere. Compared to the Gendarmarkt which is a bit more 'posh' (you have to pay to get in) I still think the Alex market is the better one for a nice atmosphere. There is an ice rink, and lots of different stalls selling different Christmas wares. We love the big open fire that they have that you can sit around and get a warm and drink some Gluwhein. Generally this market is full of friendly people enjoying a Christmas Day out.

Sterile, boring, empty, cold, noisy, depressing, a concrete hell. A deadly combination of modernism and communism. Perfect if you're planning to commit suicide.

Alexanderplatz is a great central point to explore Berlin from. It's got great hotels and shopping and good transport links to and from the airport.

As it gets dark very early at the end of December, around 4 pm one can already enjoy the lights and splendid Christmas atmosphere, hot wine, Christmas shopping etc. It's very lively in the evenings and a pleasant place to be around Christmas.
