For my friends birthday I treated her to the tour. It was great! The sun was shining and we really enjoyed getting away from the city bit. It was just us and one more family so we were a small group. The problem was that our guide mainly spoke to the german family in german. The tour was supposed to be in both languages, and the guide was american so there was no problem with his english. But he spoke for a long time in german telling the family about the houses we passed along the way. Then he did a short recap in english. I speak some german and I understood he wasn't saying even half in english.
The tour takes about 3 hours and keep in mind that you have to paddle the whole time. So you have to be somewhat fit to keep up with the guide.
Even if you don't fall in the water (the boats are very sturdy) you still get wet from paddling. And we got water in the boat from waves so our bags got wet. Don't bring your bags with you and keep a towel or raincoat over your legs. You can borrow small waterproof bags from the company to keep your camera, wallet and such.

I did the East tour last year with a bunch of friends. It's a great memory!! It's a delightful experience to see Berlin's buildings, bridges, clubs, from a very diferent angle and to access to new and unexpected stuff, to experience the lock on the canal, the water, the sun, the kayak, in the middle of boats, ducks and swans. I highly recommend.
The guide was super friendly, funny and helpful and it's actually not that physical cause pace is slow enough. Don't hesitate!

Excellent tour guide who could speak several languages, including English (can't remember his name, but he led the night tour on August 3rd). We arrived at the starting point with our bicycles and the guide loaded them into his truck for the duration of the tour. Because we were the only non-German speakers on the tour, he constantly had to guide his kayak over to us to talk to us in English, which he did with a smile.

All in all, it was a really fun and active way to see Berlin.

Do you want a different type of travel experience in Berlin? Well, we saw some of Berlin from a kayak with the wonderful new company, Kayak Berlin Tours (www.kayakberlintours.de). The owner & the tour leader met us with their truck of kayaks & equipment at the Urbanhafen (old canal) in the Kreuzberg region. As we kayaked on our 2+ hour adventure, our guide shared lots of Berlin history & lore (in English, German, Spanish, & French!!). We travelled the old canal & a bit of the Spree River. We had a great time!!
