Alter Garnisonsfriedhof is a small 18th century Prussian cemetary in Berlin-Mitte. It is the oldest military cemetery in Berlin, set up around 1706. The Garrison church no longer exists, the last burial here took place after the Second World War. The cemetery is under historical protection and contains several old gravesites from the 18th and 19th century. In the busy and buzzing Mitte district, the cemetery serves as a city park, a green patch away from the shopping trails and drinking holes. Note some mass graves in the corner of the graveyard, they contain bombing victims and foreign laborers killed in spring 1945. Make sure to observe the posted times – the main gate will simply be locked, whether you are within the gates or not.
