Travelling alone can be expensive, especially if you don't want to share the room with half a dozen of strangers. After days of searching on the Internet, I found a good deal on this place. 80 pounds for 3 nights is not cheap, when compared to a hostel, but it is a bargain for an en-suite single room plus breakfast, not too far from the city centre. It turned out to be one of the best decisions. When I got there at 11 am (3 hours before check-in time), the room was already ready for me, so I could freshen up and change after spending the previous night at the airport. My room had 2 single beds and 1 bunk bed, a shower and toilet, a large closet with a safety box, a telephone, a small TV, a table and two chairs. It was basic, but it was sufficient for a short stay. The room was very clean and large enough for 2-3 people. The staff at the reception were sweet and friendly, always willing to help. The WIFI signal was good in my room on the ground floor. The continental breakfast was better than expected. Although there were no fried eggs (only hard boiled) and bacon, I did enjoy trying a variety of cold cuts, breads, fruits and yogurt they provided. There were also cereals and muesli. They even had lactose intolerant options, which was very thoughtful. What a nice way to start a day.
The hotel is 5-7 minutes on foot from the U-Bahn/S-Bahn stations and a big department store. Gesundbrunnen is only 3 stops from Alexanderplatz, which is where the important museums are. I personally liked the liveliness of this area. Although it is not a hip or gentrified neighbourhood, Gesundbrunnen allows you to see the contemporary, multicultural Berlin. There are a lot of Turkish supermarkets, fast food takeaways and inexpensive bakery stores, which helps a lot if you are on the budget. It felt generally safe. I had no problem walking to the hotel alone from the station at 9 pm.
If there were something I didn't like about Citylight, it would be just minor stuff. For example, the room tended to be a bit too warm or the duvet was perhaps too thick for November weather. Even when I kept the heater level at the minimum, I sweated and couldn't sleep well. The pillows was a little too soft and flat. Lastly, like other have mentioned, the hotel was popular among school groups. At the times, the teenage crowd could be a little noisy. Yet, they were rather well-behaved and didn't cause any disturbance, so I didn't mind. In conclusion, Citylight Hotel is a little hidden gem and I had a really pleasant stay. It would certainly be my first choice, if I had a chance to come back to Berlin again. Danke schön.
