I recently stayed at this 'hotel' if you are to call it that, and my experience was poor to say the least. To fit four into the so designed rooms was nigh on impossible, and then to use it as a living space was simply not possible. The only positive was that my stay was so short, i could return to the grasps of civilization within days of leaving.
The food was horrendous, if you are to stay here, and i recommend you don't, do not eat on site. The supposed 'buffet' we were offered was simply a limited meal split into their components that did not taste nice in any language! To adhere, this location is neither enjoyable nor exciting, it put a dull on what for me was a great visit to Berlin, so please, do not stay here.

I never experienced a 2 stars hotel but I was very courious about this hotel that, in Gesundbrunn area, had better review than all 4 stars hotels. So I was ready to change it at the very last minute I was not satisfied. But what a surprise :) I had a 4 beds rooms wide clean and silent. Local areas are welcoming and good smelling,, the breakfast is in impressive room with a wide window and large tables, good quality and good choice of what to eat (different type of bread more salted than sweet oriented). But what surprised me more was the quality of cleaning the I didn't find in other previous hotel experinces in Berlin: clean and good smelling linen and towels every day. I paid euro 170 for 5 nights that is perfect for va.ue fpr prices. Gesundbrunn is not a very charming location but with 5 minutes stops by Ubahn you are in Alexander Platz.

Travelling alone can be expensive, especially if you don't want to share the room with half a dozen of strangers. After days of searching on the Internet, I found a good deal on this place. 80 pounds for 3 nights is not cheap, when compared to a hostel, but it is a bargain for an en-suite single room plus breakfast, not too far from the city centre. It turned out to be one of the best decisions. When I got there at 11 am (3 hours before check-in time), the room was already ready for me, so I could freshen up and change after spending the previous night at the airport. My room had 2 single beds and 1 bunk bed, a shower and toilet, a large closet with a safety box, a telephone, a small TV, a table and two chairs. It was basic, but it was sufficient for a short stay. The room was very clean and large enough for 2-3 people. The staff at the reception were sweet and friendly, always willing to help. The WIFI signal was good in my room on the ground floor. The continental breakfast was better than expected. Although there were no fried eggs (only hard boiled) and bacon, I did enjoy trying a variety of cold cuts, breads, fruits and yogurt they provided. There were also cereals and muesli. They even had lactose intolerant options, which was very thoughtful. What a nice way to start a day.

The hotel is 5-7 minutes on foot from the U-Bahn/S-Bahn stations and a big department store. Gesundbrunnen is only 3 stops from Alexanderplatz, which is where the important museums are. I personally liked the liveliness of this area. Although it is not a hip or gentrified neighbourhood, Gesundbrunnen allows you to see the contemporary, multicultural Berlin. There are a lot of Turkish supermarkets, fast food takeaways and inexpensive bakery stores, which helps a lot if you are on the budget. It felt generally safe. I had no problem walking to the hotel alone from the station at 9 pm.

If there were something I didn't like about Citylight, it would be just minor stuff. For example, the room tended to be a bit too warm or the duvet was perhaps too thick for November weather. Even when I kept the heater level at the minimum, I sweated and couldn't sleep well. The pillows was a little too soft and flat. Lastly, like other have mentioned, the hotel was popular among school groups. At the times, the teenage crowd could be a little noisy. Yet, they were rather well-behaved and didn't cause any disturbance, so I didn't mind. In conclusion, Citylight Hotel is a little hidden gem and I had a really pleasant stay. It would certainly be my first choice, if I had a chance to come back to Berlin again. Danke schön.

This was perfect for us - a simple room and bathroom, clean, free wifi and a short walk from a well connected station. Breakfast buffet included too, which was excellent value. No frills but great for exploring Berlin.

3 stars. A no-frills hotel in a fairly good location (easy access to anywhere in Berlin).

Top tips from my three nights' stay:

1. Lots of teenagers stay here. One one floor the elevator shaft even says "Youth Hotel" on it. I don't think the hotel wants that advertised, however. I had the worst night of sleep ever in a hotel; had to get moved to a higher floor
2. When the teenagers are here, get to breakfast early (before 8am). You'll know the teens are here by the many large busses parked out in front
3. Excellent Italian restaurant, Bella Italia, 5 min walk away. And cheap! 5.50 Euros for a pasta dish
4. No workout room
5. Furniture in room looks like it came out of IKEA. Basic, but looks recently purchased
6. Reception was very friendly and helpful
7. Wifi reception kept going dead every 5-10 minutes
8. Rock climbing gym across the street, but pricey
9. 5 min walk to the Gesundbrunnen train station. From there you can go anywhere and everywhere easily
10. From the Berlin Hauptbahnhof, a nonstop RE direct train takes 4 minutes to Gesundbrunnen
11. Very good breakfast. On the weekends, they add in some hot food-- eggs and bacon
12. No air conditioning in rooms. Makes warm days very uncomfortable inside
13. Good rates at this hotel

Room Tip: Avoid the floors with lots of teenagers

The hotel is not located in the middle of Berlin but it is close to the train station and we found it an easy transfer for sightseeing. The family room was very spacious and clean. The breakfast buffet was exceptional accommodating both European and American tastes. The front desk staff were always helpful. There was at least one school group staying at the hotel while we were there but they were all in one hall and didn't bother anyone as far as I could tell. I would recommend this hotel for future vists!

We stayed here at the end of December 2012. We arrived around 10am after sleeping at the Oslo Airport and taking the 6:30am flight into Berlin. It was very easy to get from Berlin Tegel Airport and we were able to get our room key straight away to have a much deserved shower. It is less than 8 minutes walk down the road from Gesundbrunnen Station and very easy to find. The rooms were spacious with a double bed and a double bunk for our children. En-suite bathroom with toilet, shower and basin was very clean. Nice hot water. The toilet wouldn't flush and within 5 minutes of reporting it to reception, someone came to fix it. The breakfast is buffet style and there are so much to choose from. You can even make your own sandwiches or croissants for lunch as a take-away and pay 50eurocents per sandwich. Once you paid, they give you property sandwich bags to wrap it. We will definitely stay here again when visiting Berlin. Gesundbrunnen Station is a mere couple of minutes on the train or u-bahn to get to anywhere in the city-centre. And if you stay here, make your very first stop at the Curry-Baude take away outside Gesundbrunnen Station on the way to the hotel. Their currywurst and home-made ketchup is amazing.
