“Architectural Splendour with Attentive Service”
Reviewed 21 April 2010

The summer breeze welcome us as we arrived at this historical building - was built in 1887 - 1889 from a design by the architect Ludwig Heim. Admiring the original architek of the entrance - few steps away, i cought the warm smile of the Front Desk agent - appeared neatly in her black suite uniform.

The check in went smooth, my room preferrence was re-confirmed along with my room package arrangements. As she escorted us to the room, she explained also told us regarding the hotel facilities and a bit story of the hotel - was a headquarters of Dresner Bank until 1945 - no wonder the room doors, for example, are designed to be reminiscent of bank vault doors.
Check in procedure = 100 % score - match the criteria of luxury hotel.

Our deluxe room is overlooking to St. Hedwig's Cathedral, the dove blue color theme and its original high dimension ceiling (over 3 m) - made this 40 m2 room appear generously in size. Room are clean and well appointed - the bathroom have separate bathtubs, glass-walled shower cabin and interesting mosaic decoration.

Breakfast was served at the Parioli restaurant - buffet style , the selection is great (not as sumptous as the Ritz Carlton Berlin) - but it suit to its boutique style property (146 rooms/suites). The Service at the restaurant is excellent. The agents are friendly and our empty plates were clear away before we asked for - great atttention. I love their small outdoor terrace.

The spa is small but well equiped - fitness room, steam room, sauna and the swimming pool. There are complimentary refreshment at the spa , unfortunately it was not well replenished (a small point for perfection).

Caught up at the shopping escapade in friedrichstrasse (which only a few blocks away) , I noticed that we were late for our afternoon tea arrangement - surprisely, they still able to serve it at the roof terrace - with a wonderful view of the city.

I am sure that this property will stands out along with their sister properties in Germany (villa Kennedy frankfurt, and the charles munich). As a part of rocco forte group, which most of their property only concentrate in european market - It just a matter of time before they brench out to other continent. The next developments are in middle east.

Thanks to the Great taste of the designer team Tommaso Ziffer and Olga Polizzi from which able to give a contemporary twist towards this historical building.
I certainly will be back to this property again - thanks to their attentive services.

This hotel is very well situated to everything. The ground was packed with snow. I stayed for 4 nights. Did some business but also saw the town. The staff are great - concierge offered to send someone to buy a 3 day DBahn pass for me! Also got me into the "new" Museum same day - almost impossible. The food and wine were first rate as was service - I ordered a glass of pinot noir in the lounge while waiting for someone - it was refilled almost without me knowing and i was only charged for the first glass. The dining area and breakfast buffet were also fantastic. The staff were like a bunch of girl next door supermodels with a freckle here and there so you were reminded they were real - efficient, personable, interactive if you wanted.

The rooms are remodelled bank office and large - the design means small closets (ok for one) and big bathrooms (I suspect they vary). The corridors between the rooms have very high ceiling scream "old worlde bank". They are quite austere and could use warming up or modern art or something.
The biggest negative here is the cost - online started at 400 Euros per night. This is over my academic budget level if I have to pay myself, so I probably will not get back - I have fond memories, however.

- Small classic suite, especially the bathroom was a disappointment - not at all the size and layout that I had been expecting based on photos that I had seen at their internet site. Photos of large classic suite bathroom are from the classic suites that do not have separate living/bedroom. Also wardrobe was very small with little space even for our 3-day luggage.
- Great SPA area and treatments
- REN products in suite - very nice. Showers in SPA (and cheaper room categories as far as I understood) has a Rocco Forte range which is also OK, but REN was of course a great plus
- Great location close to lots of shopping and sightseeing opportunities
- Great breakfast, but other food disappointing
- Service variable, sometimes really 5 star, other times far from it
- Loved look and design og common areas, but not rooms (too modern an not very comfortalble sofas and chairs)
- Bed far to hard for my liking. I love the Four Seasons beds. The bed in our suite made my back hurt badly.

There isn't much to add to the fact that the Rocco Forte Collection is today's ultimate sign of high quality smaller hotels. Conveniently located in some of the most beautiful part of Easter Berlin (first time travellers and those, who have been to the city long time ago - today Eastern part is the place, where you want to be, forget the 70-ies "flair" of the Western part of the city). The hotel is not very large and lacks frontal parking, but it is new, has high ceilings, very attentive staff, excellent bar... I can go on and on.
The restaurant is very good. For those, who want to eat out, but do not want to wanter too far - try Gendarmerie, just at the end of the same block across the street.
Concierge is very knowledgeable.
Generally a very good impression for a long weekend / romantic getaway.

We recently spent three nights at the Hotel. The location is fantastic, only a few minutes away from the main shopping area. The hotel itself is lovely. We had a classic room (lowest standard) and found the room size to be very good for Europe. We looked into an external courtyard, but did not expect anything else considering the grade/standard of room.

Lovely Ren bathroom products, and of course the standard slippers and bathrobes are supplied. Mineral water supplied free of charge every day.

The pool/spa areas is lovely (this used to be the old vault when the building was bank.

Did not eat at the hotel, but the menu's looked very nice. The cocktails in the bar were first class, with complimentary nibbles in the evening. Very nice touch.

Berlin is fabulous. We did two walking tours with Original Berlin Walks. Our guide Kenny was fabulous. These tours are extremely worthwhile.

Also, very close to the hotel is a traditional pub, called Augustiner (Charlottenstraße 55) is excellent for traditional hearty food (sausage, schnitzel, pork knuckle etc). We went three times in three days (it's that good). Staff very friendly and English menu if required.

Fabulous city, would recommend this city and this hotel - Lovely!

Strictly mediocre hotel. I've not stayed elsewhere in Berlin, so I cannot compare. But the furnishings are worn, many of the views are of a bleak interior courtyard, the lobby stinks of cigarettes, and the hallways exude all the charm of a Holiday Inn outside Fresno. Really nothing special.
