“Nice hotel with good location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2011

The price quality parameter is in top for the Ellington Htl. We did book some month in advance, so we had an even more attractive price. The room we stayed in was large (deluxe) and moderne. The breakfast buffet (good selection) was not included in our rate, and this of course comes extra. It has a good location, in the shopping area of Berlin. Ellington is of course not a five star hotel, however the design and interior of the hotel is very attractive.
I will definitely return next time I am in Berlin.

Room Tip: Upgrade to an deluxe room

I have to admit i like this hotel. I like the decor and its bauhaus style. Most of the rooms are rather small so I tend to ask for an upgrade to a deluxe room and then you have a very nice size room. In these rooms the shower is in the "middle" of the hotel room so that can be fun.

Its a big hotel so if ur unlucky u might end up walking over 3 minutes to your room from the elevator.

Breakfast is perfect.

The hotel is named after Duke Ellington and also has a Jazz radio station studio in the lobby area

My partner and I visited Berlin in mid September 2011. The hotel was perfect in location for our needs, busy shopping area, although the age group around in the day time was very old and lots of tourist buses, none the less, the hotel was wonderful. The room was very modern, a good size with great sunlight brightening up the room. the bathroom was in a unique position with no wall from the bathtub/shower into the bedroom and the windows which faced the apartments across, although they were far enough, it did feel strange having a shower and being able to see people on their balconies, but this was still a great feature. The service level was interesting, as to get to your room you do not pass the front desk or any staff the service is indeed discreet and they almost leave you to your own devices, almost to not disturb you, which was a great thing. The rest of the hotel had wonderful old design, with some amazing very art deco tiles, with different colours on each floor, loved it. the eating and drinking establishments looked awesome, but we never got to try them out.

We chose the Ellington because of its Bauhaus design and could not have been happier. The room is different but excellent, the breakfast room funky and contemporary as are the staff. The restaurant Duke's was sensational. We would have eaten there every night but felt we should be more adventurous. Relaxing in the cocktail bar at the end of the day was something we looked forward to as we walked our legs off in fascinating Berlin. All this and a history which includes German cabaret in the 30s and the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and of course, Duke Ellington, in more recent times.
Highly recommended.
Judith

In very central location. With private car parking. It has been a hospital or smth. Friendly staff. Very clean. Toilet is separate, but shower and sink is in the room, though inside of the shower can not be seen from the bed - it could be embarassing. There is no bide or sink in the toilet room, so that can be embarassing and not convenient, too. We loved the design of the hotel. We had a quiet room overlooking back side of the hotel - multistorey car park. Comfortable bed (2 beds pushed together in a double room). Good value for the price we got.

I had high expectations of this hotel given the reviews I had read about it. I even paid a lot more to have a superior room. What I got was a family room with bunk beds (I was travelling on business so last thing I needed), it was meant to have a king bed but was just two single beds pushed together. No soap or shampoo but some horrible detergent stuck on the wall of the shower ... and the shower was in the bedroom (no door you shower a few feet from the bed). The room was decorated about as cheaply as you could get - curtains where just backing material with no proper drapes. The room was really noisy - went on until the early morning and the airconditioning didn't work.

The hotel staff where as bad as the room - tried to charge for internet and breakfast even though included in the rate but they refused to believe it until I created a fuss.

Berlin has lots of fabulous hotels - this was not one of them in my experience. Just awful start to finish.

I give seminars and my client recently booked this hotel for us. Here is my impression on the various parts of the hotel:

1. Meeting facitlities: Excellent staff, very attentive - top rate
2. Hotel rooms: strange, the shower was in the middle of the room and considering the curtains didn't close properly, it was a bit awkward. If you get a room facing the road you will be awakened early as the sun comes straight into the room/or is reflected. Whatever, it makes it difficult to have a good nights rest. Rooms facing the courtyard are also a problem as there is a bar there where people sit out in the evenings. It can be very loud.
3. Food: probably the most dissapointing part of the experience. Breakfast is fine, lunch and dinner buffets are ok. If however you are on a conference package (which we were) the Duke restaurant offers very average food dressed up in fancy names. There are tons and tons of good restaurants in the side streets, it makes real sense to go discovering them.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the road or the courtyard.
