I've stayed in a lot of hostels and hotels and by far this has been the worst one I have ever stayed at. While it's relatively close to the S Bahn and the U Bahn, the hassle was not worth the stay. The staff was rude, argumentative, and blatantly did not care about those staying with them; any time the staff had to become involved with an issue, it was filled with snide remarks and gestures. The "dorm" does not have any overhead lights or windows, so you fumble around in the dark regardless of the time of day. There is no air conditioning, instead they have one opening at the top of the room which does absolutely nothing in the summer. Beyond all this, they do not allow you to check in before 3 PM (15:00), so if you get in early in the morning, you're screwed. After paying for the dorm they charge an additional five euros just to get a key and wanted a 10 euro deposit to store luggage. Then when you finally settle in for a good night's rest you are kept awake by a symphony of snores from the 30 others around you. There is no "atmosphere" and the lounge consists of an overpriced bar and a broken pool table. It's a cheap place, but it's not even worth the money you pay. Go somewhere, anywhere else.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else

Baxpax is in a good location and the rooms are clean. The way in which they run this place however is terrible. We had a number of times where we waited at the front desk for over 40 minutes to get a simple refund for the deposit of locker keys (which we had to get after they required us to move rooms due to their booking arrangements when we had booked over two months in advance).

Their is also no kitchen facilities. They are trying to run this place as a hotel and hostel and it simply doesn't work. The staff are rude and unhelpful. They have no issues with inconveniencing you and then inconveniencing even further. They had problems with basic maths also (20 euro deposit for locker keys minus a 5 euro deposit for a room key means 15 euros back to the customer). It shouldn't take 30 minutes to work that out given it's a pretty standard procedure from what I saw. Also, staff lack the ability to prioritize - serve customers waiting first, then serve new customers coming in the door after that! Again basic procedure.

We've been backpacking for over a month now and this is the worst place we've stayed at. Don't recommend them to anyone and would never stay there again.

This was a fine one-night stay for our family of four with two older teens. Room was spacious and extremely clean. (But don't forget to bring your own soap!!) Location is excellent and close to city attractions, restaurants and shopping. We enjoyed watching a World Cup game in the lounge with the young people (great for people watching too! It was a hopping place that night!). Free wi-fi, fully stocked bar/lounge, cafe, and outdoor dining area. Funky, fun decor. Friendly staff. Great value for a short stay.

Room Tip: We had quad room with two twin beds and one bunk bed. Spacious and immaculately clean.

I stayed in both 5 in 1 bedrooms and K studio in a single trip, and so know both of the sides. I'll review them both here.

While booking, you will get to choose room types which will be like single rooms, 3 in 1 bedrooms, 5 in 1 bedrooms,.. , etc, and then the K-Studio with 16 beds (what they say) in a room. I was visiting Berlin for a personal interview so choose a 5 in 1 bedroom for the first three nights (as the cost will be reimbursed for 3 nights ;-) ) and then in K studio in the next 2 days before coming back as they were bit cheaper.

5 in 1 bedrooms (or other similar 'rooms'):
The room was pretty clean and only two more guys stayed with me out of five available beds, and most of the time they were outside, which was good as I was preparing for the interview/presentation. There were big lockers to keep your luggage, but you need to bring your own lock (I had to buy a lock from the reception as I did not bring any). The room had an extremely beautiful view of the Berlin TV tower and a dome of a museum from the window-cum-balcony. There was free wifi in the room but the strength was poor, but okish to get your work done. I think it was a great room to stay with family or something when you need privacy.

K-Studio:
I shifted to K-Studio after 3 days in 5-1 bedrooms. I was directed down the basement. After going through a suffocating path which had laundary rooms/cleaning rooms on the sides and entering the K-Studio, I was completely shocked! There were around 30 + 16 beds (in two adjacent rooms) in a huge area. For all these people it had only two shower rooms and one restroom outside. Mind it, all of these were in the basement and there were no scope of windows or any natural light. Also, it had no ceilings and you can literally see the air-conditioning vents and dirty pipes and electric wires up in the roof. The locker provided against the bed was very tiny - my laptop bag was hardly fitting in. The bed makes cranks even if you make slightest of movements. The entire system looked more like a prison to me! All these were fine, but then I realized that there was no wifi! You need to go to the lobby/bar to use wifi if you really need to. All of these were kind of horrifying but I decided to stay in.
Later, I realized that all this ‘prison’ environment in K-studio helps to bring people closer so much. Since I had to frequently check emails and fb messages to stay connected to my other college friends living in Berlin, I spent a lot of time in the lobby and ‘sports lounge’. There I met many cool people. Also, lack of wifi in k studio will force you to talk to people around you (though most of the people will be found either sleeping or preparing for an outing).

Location:
I think the hotel is in an extremely good location, and most of the interesting things of Berlin are in walking distance or 1-2 stations away. Apart from the tourist places, the place is good for hangout too. On the way to oranienburger strasse, you will find multiple restaurants with happy people and a very relaxed environment. Few of them have live musician playing some soft music, making the environment of the entire street extremely relaxed. On a stressful day after a full day of ‘New Berlin’ guided tour, the streets outside the hostel are ideal to take a nice walk with your newly made friends and eat and drink in one of the many restaurants. I’ll never forget the nice experience I had here, which was ironically only because of the K-studio... I think.

Room Tip: If you are travelling solo, you can try K-studio (aka the bunker!).

Wanna be disrespected? Baxpax Berlin is the place to be! Wanna be surprised by the police in the hostel? Baxpax Berlin!

In the reception you can read a sign which says “Don’t throw your passport and your reservation on me. This is not the airport and I am not here for that!” Warm welcoming, eh? It assumes that guests have no education and are not polite (just like part of the staff and the person who wrote it). Great start, right!?

The receptionist (especially one who is from Guatemala) puts the music so loud that many times the guests think it is a party somewhere nearby. No wonder the neighbours called the police. Also, the same receptionist admitted it is very easy to be robbed there. The only control is a little paper with a handwriting of your room number. Great! I’m pretty sure they learned it with CIA. If you lose it, wooowww! You are in trouble! You will hear that your things are in risk because that little paper is everything to assure your security at Baxpax.
I am pretty sure you guys can google more and find (way) better and affordable hostels. Good luck! And Baxpax, selecting a better staff and investing more in security could do wonders to you.

Room Tip: Choose another hostel, guys! Seriously!

If you're visiting Berlin, Baxpax Hostels should be on the top you're list of hostels. Great Staff very friendly extremely knowledgeable about the city very helpful. Rooms are excellent, very well location near the center of the city. Many options on sightseeing and pub crawl and free walking tours.

Room Tip: For a different experience choose the K studio, its a room situated in the basement and has 30 beds.

Nothing too special but nothing terrible. Bar was closed and they didn't like you drinking your own booze which made no sense. Beds were not overly comfy but didn't have bunks. Not cheap but not overly expensive..... just mediocre.
