Owner description: In Europe’s largest and most modern theme museum on the topic of emigration, the German Emigration Center, Bremerhaven (Deutsches Auswandererhaus), you can authentically follow the paths of 7 Million Europeans who left their homeland via the port of Bremerhaven, Germany in search for a better life in the New World and begin a personal search for your own ancestors using our state of the art research facilities.

This German emigration/ immigration is one of the coolest museums ever! It is very interactive and interesting to see, hear, and touch. There is so much to do, and you can have fun too. :D

Tells the immigrant story in a realistc and engaging manner. However, the facilitiies for family history research are not adequate. If you have already done your own research and know the basic information, do not expect to learn much more from this museum. They will refer you to the National Archives.

Great museum, educational and fun, just don't go on a holiday or its way too crowded and hard to get around the exhibits

If you have ancestors who emigrated from Europe, I can think of no better place to get a comprehensive feel for the process. The museum offers the possibility to do research, but most sources are on-line, so that is not a good use of time. Better to wander, look, touch and enjoy. The historian will probably not learn much new, but we rarely get a chance to submerse ourselves in the history we study.

It gets quite full on weekends and public holidays, so try to reserve tickets in advance. (same to say about the Klimahaus next door) As you "become" one of the exilees with his/her biography in your hand, you pass through the different stages of leaving Germany and sailing abroad. The exposition is very impressive and illustrative, plenty to see, listen to and reflect about - recommendable for the whole family!
