A lot of the museum is build around listening to spoken info. It works well and is nicely made. The museums gives a great impresionof what people went through leaving Europe. I have also seen ellis Island, and I have to admit this facility disapointed me slightly - Maybe the experience was also disturbed by a lot of students running around trying to answer some questions.

The warm welcome at the reception counter, the ease that you could follow the story of emigration with simple touch pads with the commentary in English. The real life experiences of the families who emigrated and the whole QUALITY of the experience .

We were in Germany touring the villages of our ancestors and made this museum a priority in our plans. It is a must see museum for anyone interested in understanding the emigrant experience. We had been to Ellis Island last year and visiting this museum was coming full circle. The exhibits were designed by set designers and are very well done. Also worth taking a look at is the Bremerhaven harbor itself.

The German emigration Center in Bremerhaven gave me a special experience. First we learned about the numbers of 300 years of European emigration history to America. Then we followed a specific person and got an understanding of why this person would emigrate and how the outcome was. This was educational and very well made. Great entertainment or edutainment as I would call it. For me the last was just phantastic. A number of PCs were available all in contact with a large data base of people emigrated from Europe. I found my aunt born in 1903 and immigrating 1925 to Connecticut in USA. She visited Denmark in 1948 bringing a solid load of good clothing highly appreciated by her family still suffering from the 2nd world war. It was all done during an afternoon.

Another sort of out of the way place but worth the trip. Its a tour that makes you feel like you are on the boat to America and is very well done. The views of the harbor are amazing as well. I actually found that a few of my relatives went through here. The amazing part was the middle section where you could search through all the names that went through here in a card file system. a few things were not in English and needed to be and they need to computerize all the files for easier access but it is well worth the trip. With those few additions, they could become great. I actually found a few of my relatives who went through here but it was at the end as you are allowed to access ancestry.com for free and print up a few things. It was nice to have that option but felt like they werent trying very hard and let a website do their work for them. The staff was very helpful but a few of them didnt know their way around the website which was a little more frustrating. As stated before, a few tweeks and this place could be amazing. I found it much more fascinating than Ellis Island because it was from the Europeans point of view.
