We were 4 and we had two rooms and a clean bathroom to share. The Altan Hotel was a hotel with nice, small and clean rooms and a very nice staff. There were very little closet space, and the breakfast was dull. The location was fine, cause we were in walking distance from cool streets with great cafes and weird and cool shops.
There are one thing you probably should know about the neighborhood; at a street just nearby the hotel was a house which had been invaded by autonomous youngsters. One night, there was a lot of police on that street and the feeling was not good. But nothing happened. Also there were some really noisy and loud people a floor below us, who came home at 2 and 3 at night, very drunk and loudly. Not quite nice to be waken up by that.

Travelled to Hamburg, St Pauli for location and got good deal here. No smoking hotel that was clean and staff (owners) very friendly and helpful.

Ok, it's not exactly luxurious but we needed a base, a clean room with hot shower and decent breakfast. Got all that and free Wifi worked perfectly unlike previous reviewers comments.

So, if you want a good location for the Carnival, pubs cafés and restaurants, on a budget, then you could do worse than here. Small word of warning, you might be disturbed by the graffiti that adorns nearly every square inch of St Pauli buildings and on match days there is a threat of St Pauli football fans who are renowned for being a bit lively. The shops though are traditional and interesting.

Thanks to the owners for hospitality and looking after bags late into check out day.

Nothing was good about the hotel except for its affordability. But I think you can opt for hostels rather than this hotel.
wifi was disconnecting, rooms are congested, went in summers and no AC. yeah opening window worked well. :P
no lift or telephone..yeah but they had arrangements for parking your car..

Room Tip: should be one of the last options

Stayed in this hotel for one week with colleagues. All of us had to pay another fee. People are very friendly but the rooms are not well cleaned and the equipment is very sparse. Further several persons had to change their rooms during the week.

Stayed here over a long weekend with six middle aged friends. We thought it was ideal for what we wanted. My room ( 201 ) was small ( they all are ) but fairly well equipped with the basics. All furnishings including the toilet and shower were modern and clean - great shower.

Would I recommend this hotel for groups on a budget - absolutely yes.
Would I recommend this hotel for a romantic get away - sorry its not the one for you!

PS: I'm scoring this high because I knew we were travelling on a budget.... It is what it is - enjoy

Room Tip: Ask for 201

Never known anything like it. The customer is never right. And this hotel is very wrong. Apparently when you prepay for a set number of rooms they can't understand why you would be a bit miffed when you get one room less than what you paid for. Some of our party had to sleep on the floor. I also didn't appreciate the owner trying to have a fistfight over the counter. Major anger management required. On and beware hidden credit card charges. To sum up in two words : don't go
