It is a hostel and a hotel. The 4 people room with a privat bathroom is rather small, but it is affordable for a short stay in Hamburg. This probably the cheapest deal you can get for a clean room three Ubahn stops from city center

I came here due to me making a muddle over my booking! I originally intended to stay at AO Hauptbahnhof (see separate review) but then found I was actually booked here.

I prefer this one as it has a larger and more comfortable lounge area with a free wifi hotspot. Although AO Hbf does have a wifi hotspot near reception it is not quite so good as here. Both are called hotel hostel, although it is more hostel than hotel! However, the rooms are spotlessly clean with comfortable beds. There is only limited wardrobe space with no drawers. Another advantage of both is that you can have your breakfast on a self service basis from 6am onwards which is great if you need to make an early start.

Highly recommended if you are prepared to very slightly 'rough it' and a very competitive price compared to other hotels in Hamburg.

We booked a family room for a three night stay in July 2013. The room was pretty small for the four of us (double and a twin bunk) but clean and quiet, partly because it was downstairs under the reception, so a long way from the nearby road and late night partying upstairs. Staff friendly and helpful. Decent breakfast buffet. Can't comment on other rooms, but if you are looking for a cheap family option for hamburg, this is definitely worth considering.

Room Tip: Breakfast was good value - we were only asked to pay for the adults, so the children ate for free.

I was there for spending weekend in Hamburg with a group of friends since it is famous for the unique night life. Hotel was splendid. Very clean, room and amenities were perfect, staffs are professional. Had a nice sleep after spending the whole night out. Highly recommended :)
You have to walk 15-20 minutes to the city center or main station though. But we had no heavy luggage, so no problem for us.

The hotel/hostel exceeded our expectations. It was clean, friendly and warm (very welcome when it was snowing heavily outside). The rooms are very basic but spotlessly clean with very comfortable bed, pillows and duvet. The toilet and shower facilities again clean and functional - good water pressure and nice hot water to warm up quickly when coming in from the cold. Breakfast is great value for money and fresh and tasty and definately started each day off well. The transport links into the center and surrounding areas was easy to navigate with our Hamburg travel card, which we purchased in the airport, allowing us open access to travel on the underground, u-bahn, trains s-bahn, buses and river buses and we utilised all these to make for an interesting cheap trip. Berliner Tor is the station closest to the Hotel and it is an easy 5 minute walk to the A&O, once you get the correct station exit, all in all a good budget few nights spent in a comfortable but basic room.

The location wasn't brilliant but for the price was a tolerable walk from the U-Bahn. If heavy cases, I'd suggest a taxi to the door.

The Staff were lovely, some more so than others but overall was a pleasure walking past reception.

All rooms were facing a busy dual carriageway so had the attendant ongoing noise, the windows had very poor sound proofing so the noise was unavoidable unless you had some decent ear plugs. Everything felt as if it was done on the cheap from an Ikea remainder sale, INTERNET ACCESS IS CHARGED for which struck me a little abnormal nowadays. Free internet access in the lobby was allegedly available but over the almost week I was there it never worked once.

The rooms were once bright and inviting but mine was grubby, the cleaners only role it seemed was to come in every morning and rearrange things for no apparent reason - i actually noticed the same crisp particle was welcoming me every evening yet the cleaner had obviously been in as they managed to move my hung towels to different locations etc, no idea why.

It seems standard that the blinds don't close fully on the outside, a nice opportunity for the occupants in the facing appartment block to be voyeurs but not so nice for the hostel residents, it also lets the sun in every morning so a little tough if you were planning a lie-in.

Unless desperate, I can't see me staying in an A&O Hostel again.

I stayed there just over one night with me husband and 3 kids. The beds were poor and the bathroom smelled very bed. We did not expect much but it needs to be clean and this room was not. The only good thing was the boy who was working there, he very nice and helpful.
