We cruised in a charming old steam boat, saw the picturesque scenery and heard interesting stories told by the captain (only in German, though).

“Hamburg's history seen from sea level”
Reviewed 12 July 2012

Sadly, there's no longer any regular commuter traffic on the Alster (Hamburg's central lake), but ATG Alster-Touristik offer a choice of trips on the Alster and its connecting canals, under the heading "Alster Schippern". They all leave from the boat moorings on the Inner Alster parallel to the Jungfernstieg in the centre of town .

We chose the "Fleetfahrt", which takes you through locks and under low bridges into the network of canals in the old harbour area (the "Fleete"), including the awe inspiring 19th century brick warehouses of the recently restored Speicherstadt (Warehouse City) and the sometimes less awe inspiring new buildings in the new Hafenstadt (Harbour City).

The Hafenstadt is already full of trendy shops and cafes, and the inevitable lawyers' offices, but has a way to go yet before it becomes a truly lived-in neighbourhood. One sight is the unfinished Philharmonie Concert Hall, Hamburg's very own white elephant with vast budget overruns.

Our boat had a witty commentary throughout in fast Hamburgisch, not much help for non-German speakers, but most of what you see is self-explanatory. There are audio commentaries available in English and other languages, but to judge by the reaction of the (Danish ?) couple in front of us these don't work very well.

My Hamburg friend and I found the tour fascinating, giving an insight into Hamburg's history as seen from sea level, which you won't get from wandering around the shopping streets in the town centre. The Fleetfahrt runs up to 3 times a day, booking in advance is advisable, currently costs 19 Euros (adult) for a two hour trip, 15% reduction if you have a Hamburg Travel Card.
