“Good Location, Good Quality”
Reviewed 19 May 2009

I enjoyed a pleasant 2 night stay at the renaissance which is located on a small square (chich can be noisy at night) close to most parts of the city that a visitor will need to visit.

There are a variety of room size for varying prices - I was booked into a small room but upgraded to a larger room wih breakfast for just 40 Euros which was great value when you find that breakfast is over half that amount in itself. My upgraded room was a very good size with large clean and functional bathroom. Breakfast was top notch with a huge variety of hot and cold choices and good service.

Reception where extremely helpful and went the extra mile to provide all the detail I needed about Hamburg city. Theres an S-line train station nearby that gets you to and from the airport.

No hesitation about staying here again.

Our 3 day weekday hotel stay was booked via Priceline for a very reasonable price. I had to call the hotel directly to confirm my room preferences and had absolutely no problems.

Location: Approx 300 meters from the Außenalster (small Alster Lake). It's central to the shopping district and the metro is a five minute walk.

Check-in: Our experience with the front desk staff was very positive. We arrived late in the evening and left early in the morning yet staff were very efficient and friendly.

Rooms: American style rooms. Beds were comfortable enough and there was enough room for two of use to move around. There was a working desk also and an arm chair. Washroom was a decent size but plain.

Wired internet was available for a fee in room. They have a free computer by the elevators but it's meant for quick browsing rather than writing long emails.

Restaurants and Room Service: There is a lounge in the lobby level. Food was very good and there was a good assortment of beverages. I found the range of teas and even the wine list to be better than I would expect in a smallish hotel lounge. My friend was ill during our stay and availed herself of room service --the room service selection was fairly mundane but she had no complaints. There are food options galore in the area.

Surrounding Area: Lots of shopping and eating in the area. For those that are getting food on the run or self catering, there are several sandwich stands and a super market in a building two doors down the Grosse Bleichen street. The Alsterhaus department store is at the southern edge of the Außenalster and the metro is located in front of the store. The front desk will provide you with a tourist map.

Overall, a very good stay!

I was in Hamburg for one night on business. I stayed here because it was handy for the airport and the train stations, although I got taxis in the end. Taxis are quite chepa, certainly by comparison to Netherlands. Hamburg town centre is stunningly beautiful and I was fortunate to be there during a hot day, so there were plenty of people wandering the streets and relaxing by the lake.
Check in was very very slow but I got there in the end. The lobby is welcoming (or would have been if there wasn't a queue of fed up folk in suits, sweltering under the balmy heat of the evening!. Bar prices in the hotel were astronomical. The room was spacious and the business facilities were ideal. The hotel was spotless.
I didn't eat my evening meal in the hotel. I walked round the lake to an Italian restaurant (when in Rome?!) which was good value for money with possibly Europe's grumpiest waiting staff.
The breakfast buffet was impressive and the service was impeccable.
I hope to be back in Hamburg, and if I am I will not hesitate to stay at the Renaissance again.

I stayed here in May during an incredible stretch of good weather. The high ceiling room with large windows made the room quite sunny and appealing when I needed to stay in and work. The only down side was the noisy street below. However with the windows closed, one could sleep fairly well. Would not recommend this hotel to light sleepers because of the way the sounds ricochet on the narrow streets below. But it's a great location. You can walk to wonderful shops, sights, and restaurants. The hotel is physically gorgeous with a comfortable lobby, eager-to-please staff, and free coffee in the mornings for guests. You'll need free here if you are American because it's not only expensive -- 24 euros for a continental breakfast -- it's doubly hurting for those with the weak US dollar. So don't eat in the hotel--just head across the street to the gazillion coffee shops or restaurants and save money.

In the hotel, enjoy the exceedingly comfortable beds. Good housekeeping. Cheerful staff. Wireless access (12 euros a day). Immediate hot water in the shower. Nice amenities (including slippers) and beautiful setting.

Overall, we were quite pleased. It's a large hotel, but we never had to wait for anything.

The location of the Renaissance is wonderful for shopping and touring Hamburg. It's in the midst of shopper's paradise with a wealth of shops of all varieties and price range within walking distance. My friend and I went up for a weekend, spent Saturday shopping and Sunday touring. And contrary to some opinions, there are plenty of sales available, even considering the exchange rate.

The hotel itself is the right size, and the prior reviews were pretty much on target. The remodeling is complete. The rooms are American style and size, and the beds are quite comfortable. Traveler's photos on this site are pretty accurate. We didn't try the restaurant or the breakfast, but the one room service meal was very good with reasonable prices. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, bakeries, etc within walking distance. The food court and restaurant sin the Europa shopping gallery is open on Sundays as well. Complimentary coffee and tea and fruit are available in the lobby to hold you over.

The staff was very courteous and helpful, and added to the enjoyment of the trip with suggestions and directions. They also have maps and tour books available at the front desk.

This hotel has been refurbished since I was there last year and is truly a great hotel and very cheap too. The reception area is now really nice. Staff are excellent - very helpful re: booking cabs, payments, even doing my online flight check in for me.

I have stayed here a few times over the last few weeks and your room is variable! All are nicely done and impeccably clean. However, I have had really quite small rooms to enormous rooms. I do not know what the system is as the same price is paid. Anyway, all rooms have good amenities and everything is in good order and clean. Internet connect is easy and reasonable.

Good location in the centre.

A great hotel at a great price.

I booked an awards stay at the Renaissance. Having stayed there many times before I was interested to see how the refurb of the ground floor had gone. On the whole I was very impressed with the new areas. The bar in the main part of the ground floor was very nice and always busy.

My main compleint is that the reception desk has now been placed on the upper level, immediately at the front door. The desk is L shaped and really can only accommodate two persons checking in / out at once. When I arrived, there was one person being dealt with, one person behind him and then me. That meant that I was actually standing in the doorway.

The room was well furnished with the usual huge bed. Surprisingly, there are still not any safes in the rooms.

I did not have any meals in the hotel so cannot comment on the restaurant.

  • Liked — Huge comfortable bed
  • Disliked — Tiny reception area right next to outside door
