We came with high expectations and left disappointed. After staying at a few 'historic' Renaissance hotels recently we were really looking forward to another great stay at this Hamburg property. I understand it is all about 'location, location, location' for this hotel, but for me personally this is not a factor at all in a city with great public transportation. We arrived later in the evening and to my surprise they were unable to give us any kind of room upgrade (I am a Marriott gold member), the first time in many years at any Marriott hotel worldwide. In fact they didn't even respond to my polite question whether they might have a nicer room available, the front desk staff rather gave us a spiel about the historic nature and this is why they couldn't offer a concierge lounge. Interestingly I didn't even ask about a lounge (I knew they didn't have one) and maybe they should try and visit other 'historic' hotels to see that this is in fact possible. On the way to our room the hallway smelled like the old 60s hotels and we wondered if this was part of the 'historic' experience. The room itself was very much on the small side and the door locks as well as the 'a/c' were truly historic. A 4-5 * hotel without electronic climate control? An old dial where you can set your room temperature? Are they serious? In fact the a/c was loud and we were unsuccessful in turning it off (no on/off !). Consequently we didn’t sleep very well at all, which is a major reason why I gave this hotel a low rating. At $200 for a weekend night I expect more. The bathroom was o.k., but it could see a few updates as well. The room and the entire hotel really need an update (except for the lobby area); the hotel management should go to Chicago and visit the Blackstone to see how you can preserve history while providing up to date amenities.
For a hotel of this category and price I expected a lot more and everything over $120 for a weekend night is way overpriced.

We were particularly impressed by the welcome from reception. They were consistently helpful and tired hard to sort out every issue that arose. We were there during the volcanic disruptions and they helped in every way that they could. Central, pleasant and unassuming in an interesting 1920's period building that is completely modern inside so that the rooms are well presented, airconditioned etc. and pleasantly spacious (they differ a bit on price so sizes vary). I would definitely stay again.

Stayed in this place with my wife on a "babymoon" weekend. As reported by others, we ended up in one of the accessible rooms - seems they have a lot of these. The bathroom reminded us of student dorm days: After shower, the whole bathroom is flooded in the lack of a shower curtain. Not bad for a four-star location.

Things continued with breakfast, the price of which raised some expectations. Unfortunately, it seems the breakfast underwent some recent cost-cutting - saying they didn't serve much exciting is a mild judgement.

Location might be a plus of this place. However, for us it was impossible to even unload our luggage in the lack of temporary parking in front of their main door.

Traveling for leisure w/ my husband and 6 year old daughter--we are on a 10 day vacation from America. Booked on Priceline so got a great deal. Perhaps that is why we got stuck with the handicap accessible room that had all kinds of gadgets, emergency pull cords and wacky shower that sent water all over the bathroom.

Pros: best location (5 min walk to Rathaus), great shopping, helpful and curteous staff, free internet accessible computer w/ printer in the lobby, complimentary coffee prior to 9 am.
Cons: Wi-fi in your room is $30 a day; parking is $28 a day; breakfast is extra at $30 per person.

Would recommend this hotel w/ financial reservations--but as long as you are willing to check your email in the lobby while being eyed by visitors, it's nice.

The hotel is lovelly. I booked a Queen Room with breakfast for 2 at a good rate through lastminute.com. However the Hotel had no record of breakfast and Lastminute.com would only handle the issue if I called their premium rate number in the UK. They would not handle it via their customer support site. The support site stated that there was a high volume of calls to the premium line! So I didn't try to call it.
Also, the Invoice from the hotel was substantially lower in Euros then I paid in pounds!
I will never use LastMinute again. But I would definately stay at the Renaissance again.

Just returned from Hamburg, still impressed by this nice city. We met friends from England there and had an nice long weekend chating, eating and shopping. Hotel in very close to the main Railway and bus station (you get there with S1 train from airport), so taxi costs only few EUR.
Check-in was fast, personel fine. There is very very nice hotel lobby with nice bar. Service was maybe a little slow, but doesn´t matter.
As Hamburg is not very large city, you can actually walk around with no problems. And from that point is hotel perfectly situated. Many shops around, than restaurants and little further bars.
Hotel is clean, can´t tell about breakfast, as we didn´t have it
Would recommend it to anyone, no doubt.
