“Great location”
Reviewed 13 April 2014 via mobile

Typical Ibis hotel, nothing fancy but great for a short stay in any city. Excellent location near the station and Lake. Very quiet street but within walking distance to all the attractions. We didn't have much interaction with the staff apart from check-in/out but they were friendly in both instances. Would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it!

This hotel is a great find. It's location is really near the station/ city centre so if very handy. The rooms are basic- don't expect any frills, but are really practical. There's a big desk, it's clean and properly maintained. The staff are really friendly and the bar/ computer/ restaurant area downstairs is really relaxed and somewhere you feel comfortable sitting. If you're travelling on a budget and want somewhere clean and tidy with a friendly feel then I don't think you could go wrong.

First impressions upon arrival at the Alster Ibis was that this is a very clean, basic hotel. No thrills, bells or whistles. I was travelling with a group of eight friends on a weekend jolly and if you want somewhere with a great location and within a five minute walk from Hamburg main train station then look no further. A simple 25 minute train journey on the S1 line from the airport and you are here. A 10-15 minute wander from the hotel will get you to the warehouse district and shops and some great water views or if you want a nice evening meal you can walk a few streets up and sample traditional German food, Indian or whatever you fancy. There was no tea or coffee machine in our room but that wasn't an issue. In the lobby you can chill out at the bar or relax in a soft chair. The bed was nice and comfortable and the shower hot, what more can you ask. We came in late one night and wanted something to eat. The receptionist went out of his way and beyond the call of duty to accommodate us. That made our evening and we showed our appreciation. So all in all this hotel is good value for money and very friendly too. Thank you, it was an enjoyable stay.

Whenever we visit Hamburg we usually stay at
the Ibis Hamburg Alster Hotel on Holzdamm Street.

The hotel has an excellent and very convenient location
especially if you travel to Hamburg by train.
It is situated on a quiet street no so far away
(around 800m - 5-7 minutes' walk, max. 10 minutes' walk
when with heavy baggage) from the Main (Central) Railway Station - Hauptbahnhof.
Also within several (10-15) minutes' walk to the city center (Jungfernstieg or Moenckebergstrasse); it is around 2km to Jungfernstieg/Rathausmarkt - a nice walk along Binnenalster Lake.
The hotel lobby and reception have just been redesigned and renovated
but I do not like their new modern look. I preferred the previous design.

The check-in is usually simple and quick in all the Ibis hotels (at which I often stay),
however, at the Ibis Hamburg Alster last December, it turned out to be difficult to find
a vacant room with a double bed for me and my husband,
although I have a Gold Card (Le Club Accor Hotels). It took really a long time
and I was really disappointed. We had never had a problem like that
at the Ibis Hamburg Alster before (we had stayed at the same hotel at least 6 times before).

There is only 1 elevator (lift) both in the main building of the hotel
and in the other side building as well. That is a big minus!
I sometimes had to
wait for it for a few minutes (at least three times during my latest
5-night stay). One elevator (lift) in each of the two hotel buildings
(165 rooms) is too little for a 2.5 star hotel and the prices it often charges.
The hotel rooms get extremely expensive on certain nights
(over 100 Euros). The hotel is located opposite the luxurious
5-star Hotel Atlantic Kempinski, but that may not be the reason for that.
I once stayed at the Atlantic Kempinski as it was more profitable
to stay there than at the opposite Ibis hotel!
The quality of the room and what the hotel offers its guests
does not justify the high rates. Last December (pre-Christmas period)
the room rate rose (online) from 66.40 Euro to 93 Euro than fell down
to 74.40 Euro and rose again (we saw 101 Euro on the street
when leaving). I do not know why the Monday night
was the most expensive of all. [A similar Ibis hotel in Berlin-Spandau,
our favorite one, where we also stayed two times last December
does not have so fluctuating hotel room rates, we had the same
online price 55.20 Euro for our several December nights there.]
It is especially frustrating that you have to pay different rates
for different nights while you stay 5 nights in the same room
and you sleep in the same bed with no change of the quality
of your stay!
There are no tea/coffee-making facilities, only 1 elevator (lift)
and some steps (stairs) in the middle of the corridors.
The hotel may also get noisy if your room window overlooks
the downtown (Altstadt - City Center), it also overlooks
the train tracks. When you open the window and a train
approaches/comes it gets really noisy.
So the hotel is not good for value!

We stay there because
of its perfect location and excellent places to eat nearby
on the way from/to the Hauptbahnhof (Main Railway Station).
The places such as Hansebaecker Junge - die Baeckerei
- Junge Bakery and Cafe (at 19 Kirchenallee beside U-bahn Hbf-Nord)
- perfect for breakfast or lunch before your
train arrives, or Manju (delicious Indian cuisine) in der Wandelhalle
of the Hauptbahnhof (ideal for good, inexpensive dinners).
There are lots of other eateries and a supermarket (Edeka)
in the Wandelhalle at the Hauptbahnhof, too.

We also like the hotel rooms- typical of all the other Ibis hotels:
quite comfortable, although basic, clean and cozy.
The double bed is very comfortable; there is a flat LCD TV,
some shelves and hangers; a tabletop by the window
but there is only one chair, not enough for a double room.
There should be two chairs for two people. The room is
not only for sleeping, or maybe I am wrong?

The bathroom is basic but functional,
although it is not our favorite.
It is not like the one in Berlin-Spandau or
some Ibis hotels in London.
It has all you need, a decent shower cabin,
a large and powerful shower head
with a long hose, a washbasin, a large mirror,
2 lamps, a toilet and 3 towels for each person.

We would rather give 2.5 stars
to the Ibis Berlin Spandau and only 2 stars
to the Ibis Hamburg Alster. Anyway,
the Ibis Hamburg Alster hotel has still been
our best base for Hamburg for years.
It is good if you find better cheaper rates online in advance
and it may be excellent at times if you come
to Hamburg to visit the city numerous attractions
and you have a cozy room to return to
after a long day full of splendid impressions.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building are nearer the reception and the ones overlooking the street (Holzdamm...

The hotel is very conveniently located. It is on a quiet street but is just a short distance from the main train station. The city centre is also very accessible from the hotel. The hotel was well maintained and the staff friendly and efficient. The rooms are like those in all other Ibis hotels and our room was clean and well maintained. Breakfast was good and the breakfast room was kept clean and tidy. I would have no difficuly in recommending this hotel for anybody planning a short visit to Hamburg and wanting a good hotel in a very good location.

This Ibis Hotel is in a very convenient position, just a few minutes' walk from the Central Station, the Kunsthalle, the city centre and the Alster Lakes. Everything about the hotel is typically and satisfactorily Ibis. One of the previous reviewers commented that there was no food service, except for the breakfast service. I think what she meant was that there was no food service available when she arrived at midnight. In fact, this hotel has a very attractive restaurant, in which I dined on two of my four nights' stay. The service was courteous and attentive and the food was fine. Beware, however; if there is a group of some kind dining in the restaurant, you will be excluded and invited to dine in the bar, which was not for me. It wasn't a great problem, as there are many restaurants in the streets around the hotel. I would stay again but for excluding a hotel guest from the restaurant, I rate it Very Good instead of Excellent.
