“Nothing special but ok”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2013 via mobile

This was probably a nice old hotel once upon a time. It's ok, room at the front was noisy and there was no air conditioning. It was also a smoking room when I had requested non smoking. Staff are friendly and spoke English, although a cup of coffee at 9pm was too difficult for them. Breakfast was good. Located 5 min walk from Dammtor main line station, 2 mins from the U-Bahn, both of which are a short hop from the main station. There are a couple of restaurants close by and a friendly little bar next door (Klimperkiste). I would stay again, but its nothing special and pricey for what it is - but Hamburg is an expensive place to stay.

This hotel is great for what you pay for. The location is central (near Alster), the rooms are clean and the staff is nice. The basic room has a small bed, but again, based on the location, cleanliness and price, I can't complain. I would definitely stay here again when in hamburg.

The Alster-Hof is a Nice 3 star Hotel situated in the centre of Hamburg, somewhat basic, nicely priced and well-located. The hotel is part of a chain, the welcome at reception is warm, friendly and efficient. All the receptionists spoke good English & one of them went out of his way to help an American Guest recover her lost luggage all the way from San Francisco. The room was clean and had a shower, Safe, mini bar & TV. there was a PC available to all the guests to check their emails & internet (Bit on the slow side & needed updating)
The bar was basic (Better choice in the Baseler Hof next door) but the barman was an old school German who spoke broken English, had one or two discussions with him, He did like Glenn Miller & Frank Sinatra for some Strange reason.
The lounge area was very nice if a little quiet.
Bad points?
The waitresses did not serve me coffee at Breakfast (Twice out of 7 times)
Charging for wifi, Not on in this day & age for business travellers.
The Traffic noise at night, not the hotels fault considering where it is.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear of the hotel when you book.

This hotel has a very good location if you are going to The Hamburger Staatsoper. It is clean and there is a very good breakfast with many choices. Rooms are quiet if you stay in a room to the Court side.
Two things are missing is a kettle and free WiFi.

We chose this Hotel from Trip advisor comments and were very pleasede with our stay of 8 days. Our room overlooked an inner courtyard but was quiet even with the windows open. The room itself was vast with a full sized sofa and a workdesk. The bathroom was equallly palatial. The whole Hotel had the feel of a Grand Hotel slightly down on its luck. Breakfast were good - though the supplied coffee was on the weak side - but there was a great variety of food and fruit. Staff were always attentive and helfpul and the breakfast room never seemed overcrowded. The Hotel is a five minute walk from Dammtor Bahnhof where the main line trains stop so the Hotel can easily be reached, though it was pouring with rain the day we arrived, so availed of a 5 Euro taxi ride. The Bayresher Hof hotel next door is one star up but appears to be in the same Hotel association - we ate there onece and their wine list is fabulous. The Operahouse is just round the corner and all the main shops in the centre of Hamburg are only a 10 minute walk. The U Bahn station is 100 metres from the hotel and gets to the airport with one change - however there is no lift or escalator going down so bags have to be humped down two sets of stairs.

The Alster-Hof is a lovely, somewhat basic, nicely priced and well-located (on top of U Bahnstation Stephansplatz) to stay with only one drawback for business travellers: it still has this old-fashioned idea of charging for WiFi, where more and more hotels now provide it for free. Count on € 4,95 for a card giving you 24 hours access on a Telekom HotSpot. There's also a card for € 20 for longer access (both from reception). The WiFi-quality is excellent.
The hotel is not part of a chain, the welcome at reception is warm, friendly and efficient. Typically roomkeys are of the old sort, large lumps of metal. The decor is German and homely with a lot of browns and in some places the hotel is a bit frayed. My room (318) was palatial, with a small hall, separate (big) bathroom (huge shower) and a large room. It had a double bed (excellent quality) and a nice sitting area. For that I paid € 105 a night including breakfast (€ 4), for which I didn't have enough time. Next to the breakfast room is the bar with a small sitting area. The great thing is the room is the properly stocked minibar (reasonable prices). You can also get drinks at the bar and take them upstairs. A nice welcome in the room: two free bottles of water.
I would not hesitate to come back. Price/quality ratio is fine. There are several restaurants nearby.

I have stayed at the same hotel for some years now when I attend the Hamburg Messe show every year.
The hotel fits the bill in every way, the staff are friendly, the food is always good and most important it is not expensive to stay there.

You are within walking distance of the center and you also have lots of other things to do locally, there are also some very nice restaurants close to the hotel and they are not expensive.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms at the rear of the hotel as they seem to have been recently re-decorated an...
