“Cozy and Friendly Atmosphere”
Reviewed 17 December 2008

This is the second time that I have visited this hotel, and once again, the staff exceeded my expectations. This is a smaller "family" run hotel. It may not actually be family run, but it feels that way.
It is located across the street from the Hamburg museum, 3 blocks from the DOM fairs and 3 blocks from the Reeperbahn. It is about 1 km form the Messe trade center. Easy walking distance.
Very nice breakfast buffet of cheese, fruit, fish, along with the standard eggs, sausage and bacon, all attended to by a charming hostess.
Very up to date rooms, but I suggest you focus on the double, or queen rooms, as the singles are quite cramped.
The hotel is going through a renovation this month (12/08), and will be removing their theater and small bowling alley to add more rooms. I am looking forward to seeing how this all turns out on my next visit.

I spent three nights at this property recently. The location is excellent. You are blocks from the Reeperbahn, and conveniently located at the St. Pauli metro stops. As well, I found that the bus 112 runs right in front of the hotel. That line goes to the most interesting places in Hamburg. The room was spacious, immaculately clean, and the staff was pleasant. Words of warning include: some staff members struggled with English, double check to make sure breakfast is included in your room cost (it wasn't in my case), and the walls are paper thin. I heard every conversation that a German lady next door had on her cell phone, even at 7A on a Saturday morning.

Great location. Walking distance to Reeperbahn, Neuer Wall (shopping), U-Bahn, the harbour etc. Small but clean room with almost
brand new bathroom. Private nearby garage for EUR 12.00 per day.

It's been almost two years since I stayed there....but I just got into the writing online reviews thing now...
The hotel was in a quiet place, not very exciting, but the room was nice, clean, and it was in a convenient walking distance to the major attractions (red district, water, shopping area, etc). It would have been just an average hotel except for the nice friendly staff.

  • Liked — Quiet but close enough to some main attractions.
  • Disliked — Not much around it.

The hotel has no non-smoking rooms at all. They will gladly take a non-smoking reservation. This made my stay unbearable. Smoke can be avoided by trying to get a room on the street side of the building (though noise will be a problem) as it is away from the open windows of the bar which allow the smoke to drift right into your room. They also had no non-down based bedding material causing even more problems.

If you don't have allergies or care that your room smells of cigarettes, the hotel is perfectly OK.

We stayed here for 3 nights in March and would recommend this hotel to others.

As the per the previous review we found the hotel very easy to find. We got the Jasper coach from the airport, which drops you at the main station. We then got a tube on line U3 to St Pauli station. It is just round the corner.

In our first night we stayed in room 201, the room itself was lovely, however it was facing the road and due to the single glazing we found it very noisy. If you have trouble sleeping with traffic noise, I would suggest avoiding the rooms at the front 101-104, 201-204 etc. Also the hotel has only very thin curtains.

The reception staff were very helpful when we asked to move rooms in the morning and arranged for room 314 to be cleaned while we had breakfast.

The hotel is very clean and nicely decorated. The bar has a very nice atmosphere and the breakfast is well stocked with hot & cold food. Only drawback is no English tea!

Across the road from the hotel is a lovely park with an outdoor ice rink.

All in all this hotel was very nice

The Holstenwall Hotel is located very centrally to the lively Reeperbhan area of Hamburg. We found it on hotels(-), which also proved to be the cheapest price of all the online booking services. Another factor that decided the hotel was for us, was most of the Hotels advertised showed 2 single beds pushed together for use as a double...we wanted a double, or larger sized bed without the embarrasment of asking.

Its only a short five minute stroll to cafes, resturants and theatres, most of the other Hamburg attractions, and the nightlife, but is far enough away not to be affected by the noise genererated from the area, which stays open almost 24hours! Another bonus is its very easily located from the city centre...(approx 5 mins by bus) from central station costs euro 1.50, and stops almost directly outside the hotel. Taxi costs approx euro8 from central station.

The room (306) was a double sized room (2 rooms knocked into one), and was very comfortable for a longer stay. The room had a very comfy bed, and lovely comfortable pillows...a must when on holiday! The room and bathroom were very clean, and well serviced. A big minus point was the lack of a Kettle and T/Coffee facilities in the room. Also, the resturant is closed through the day, as is the bar. It only serves food at breakfast, and a basic evening meal. We didnt eat at the hotel in the evening, but would recommend eating out in some of the many lovely returants and cafes.
Staff were excellent, most of them having some to very good English. Just a wee note here, not many locals have ANY English, so a phrasebook is imparative if you dont speak German.
Overall, we were very impressed with the hotel, and its location. The staff are lovely and very helpful....going so far as to almost forget to take payment for the room on departure..ohhhh, if only I hadnt had that last puff of a ciggy before jumping into the taxi as we departed.......all in all, it was a smashing, comfortable, clean hotel, which was in an ideal location for our holiday.
