“Really nice hotel, good location”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

We stayed at the Grand Elysee Hotel in the weekend of New Years. We were in Hamburg to enjoy the city and just be out.

The hotel is really nice. It's everything you expect from a 5 star hotel. It's clean, friendly employees and the rooms are good. The hotel has lots of extras: bars, restaurants etc. The best is the swimming pool and spa. For a hotel this is really a big area. The pool (with hot tub) has a good size (I estimate it's 20m long by 15m). The sauna area has several different saunas and the staff here is again really nice.

All in all a good stay for business and leisure

Very Nice Hotel and Spa
The staff was friendly and helpful. The building was clean and well maintained. The Grand Elysee is known for the art works around the hotel. It is also in a good location, a very short walk to the S-bahn and within waking distance of the City Center. The hotel has restaurants for lunch and dinner, but I always ate these meals out.

The room was great, the bed was comfortable, the shower was very good. My room had a little balcony, just large enough to get a little fresh air. I judge a room by the bed and the bathroom. I had a king sized bed that was VERY comfortable. The Bathroom was large enough and very modern. The shower had a good shower head, it was high enough and there was enough room.

I ate breakfast in the hotel, it was good just not €20 good.

Now the Spa, it is fantastic. It has a large pool area with plenty of comfort lounge chairs, it also has a large comfortable whirlpool (not too hot). The fitness center is good with good equipment. The locker room was clean with nice lockers. The saunas and sauna area is great, they have two saunas, a steam room, shelves for personal items, and showers. All are coed, so leave your inhibitions at the door.

A comment about Spas in Germany and Europe. A Spa is a place of health, fitness and relaxation. It is not a place for socializing, playing or partying. Can you take the kids to the pool, yes but make sure they understand they cannot be loud or rowdy.
Some general guidelines and comments about using German or European Spas
Swimming Pools Men don't wear long surf shorts unless you want to look unfashionable, instead try a shorter well fitting boxer. Speedo are very common. Keep in mind there may be other guest there trying to swim laps. In some German Spas swimwear is NOT allowed even in and around the swimming pools.
Saunas: Swimwear is NEVER allowed If you are entering the sauna area from the pool you remove your swimsuit and shower first. At most Spas expect to be nude in the sauna. If you are too much of a prude don't go to saunas. You are always expected to shower first. When you are ready, walk in the sauna spread out your towel where you want to sit or lay and enjoy the sauna. You should stay completely on your towel, that includes your feet. You should try to keep all sweet off the wood.

I am always glad to answer questions

It's a comfortable hotel with a great sauna/spa.
The (standard) rooms are of an adequate size and are very clean. They have great matrasses too. I'd give this hotel 4 stars though. That's because the finishing touch you'd expect from a five star hotel just isn't there:
- there were only two big towels
- a small block of soap instead of shower gel
- the bathroom looks ok and clean, but some items were broken
- it's nice to have free internet, but it's wired and 200 kb/s just isn't high speed (as claimed)

I certainly do not regret my stay in this hotel, but I'm not sure if it was worth € 140 a night (that's without breakfast!)

Tip if you're travelling by car: use one of the free P+R parking lots. There's always a tube or S-Bahn station nearby wich will take you to the Dammtor station in minutes.

Stayed 2 nights whilst attending the Intermodal exhibition at the Hamburg Messe which is a 10 minute walk. This large but friendly hotel is of high quality. Rooms are spacious and have comfortable beds and clean shower and bathrooms with nice complimentray soaps etc. A quiet and sound nights sleep assured.
The hotel's in house restaurant was excellent, ate there both nights from choice, rack of lamb and the fillet of beef wonderful. Attentive, knowledgeable staff and not was a problem.
The Burbon street bar is a friendly and relaxing place serving all types of cocktails.
This is the first time I stayed here but will make sure I visit again, super service.

This hotel is perfect for business and pleasure travelers. Minutes from a metro station that is one stop from the city center. All the amenities you'll need, spa, pool, 4 different types of saunas, great staff, concierge and restaurants. I read on their welcome guide that guest kids (8mths - school age) can spend the day at the hotel kindergarden that was built for neighborhood and hotel employee's children.

Stayed here August 2011 as part of a family summer trip to Germany. Found the hotel more business like than family friendly. Had two non connecting rooms facing the park. This part of the city seemed more residential and very quiet at night so sleeping was not a problem. Very clean place but not warm feeling. Felt like I was in an office building with no character rather than a five star hotel.

That being said the staff was friendly and helpful. We did not eat in the hotel and only used the pool area for a short time. The sight-seeing / on-off bus stopped right outside the hotel so getting around the city to all the attractions is very easy.
