“4+ hotel in a quiet alley close to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 November 2013

Hotel Eleazar Novum is close to Hamburg Central Station (Hamburg Hauptbahnhof)and very easy to find. Get out of the station to the eastern side and pass the parked cars and look over to the other side of Kirchenallee and you will see Hotel Bismarck on the corner of a small street, which is Bremer Reihe where Hotel Eleazar Novum is situated a block away.

The hotel is quite easy accessible, just two small steps from the pavement at the entrance. I doubt through that a wheel chair would get into the lift.

I enjoyed staying at this hotel. The staff in the reception were really helpful and friendly. I also met the cleaning lady, a charming woman from Ghana.

My singel room at the top floor was spotlessly clean and equipped with two cupboards, writing table with table lamp, TV and a safe box. (You pay a deposit at the reception to get the safe key.)The free wifi worked fine during all my stay.

The tiled bathroom in light colours was quite spacious but the wash basin was minimal, the kind you normally find in cramped toilets.

The breakfast restaurant on the first floor was nicely furnished and had enough walking space to get your breakfast even when fully seated. The breakfast contained fresh fruit, youghurt, cottage cheese, cornflaces, muessli, bread, butter, coffe, tea, juices, brie, 3 kinds of sliced cheese, german dried ham and another 6 kinds of ham and sausages. The cold buffet was complemented with boiled eggs and scrambled eggs.

I do recommend this hotel and I would certainly stay here if I return to Hamburg.

Easy walk from train station. Nice welcome from staff. Hotel very secure. Room small but ok. Window overlooks street below where there were working woman on the corner opposite. Street was very noisy all night. Yelling and bottles smashing. Even with window closed it was really loud. Found it very hard to sleep.
No tea/coffee making facilities.
Bathroom has a towel warmer which is great for drying your clothes on.
Breakfast was very good with a great selection of hot and cold food.
We ate every night at the train station as it has a food hall with great choices. Also has supermarket. Only 5 minutes back to hotel.

The GOOD
Basic/average hotel
Clean rooms
Nice bathroom
Location is 5 minutes from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof

The BAD
Rooms have VERY thin walls
The beds are of very poor quality and very low down, AVOID this hotel if you have a bad back.
NO breakfast included (additional E7.50)
The lift start 10-15 steps up so if you have a heavy suitcase, forget it, you have to carry it upstairs to get to the lift!
Speaking of THE LIFT - A rattly, clunking, neck jarring, noisy lift - not something i've seen even in the poorest continents.

Had to ask to move rooms due to the ridiculous noise of the hotel lift, which was clunking away all night! after a phone call to reception by my girlfriend, they advised all rooms were booked. When i went down to the reception with a face of thunder, they phoned the manager and things were suddenly different, we were moved to another room, slightly better and away from the lift. (not quite sure why they lied for initially)

The UGLY
Centered in what seems to be a low key red light district area - prostitutes hang around the shops trawling for trade from 9am onwards, despite this area is safe.

Rating would probably be a 2.5 as there are no half marks im going to round it down.
NOT worth the money in my opinion

Room Tip: AVOID rooms next to the lift!

It's located very close to the train station, so that is definitely a plus. As an American, what I found interesting is that this hotel is located on a very busy street. This includes multiple girls working the corners as soon as you walk out of the hotel (prostitution is legal in Germany). People were also doing drugs and drinking beer out in the open. It's not a problem it's just interesting. The hotel was about 150 degrees the whole time and there was no way to turn on air or open a window. It was very hot, this being only about 60-70 degrees outside. There was also a banging noise throughout the night that we could not figure out. This is also the first hotel I've ever been to that makes you leave your key at the desk when you leave the hotel, and you only get one key per room. The service was good though.

The proximity to Hamburg Hauptbahnof & some good restaurants are great plus points. The next best plus point is the relatively calm neighbourhood - we can afford to keep the windows open. The rooms are very small and the Wifi connection bad. The staff are reasonable. Surprisingly the hotel was full over this weekend and I had to shift due to the unexpected extension.

Room Tip: If you need good Wifi, go for lower floors.

First of all, this is a great hotel if you are visiting the city and plan to spend most of the time in the city. Do not expect a restaurant or room service, but the rooms are very clean, big enough (not great), the bathrooms are newly refurbished and the staff was always available and very helpful. Wheelchair accessibility, however, is not granted.
Being just 5 minutes away from the central station, most tourist attractions are reachable within 15-20 minutes or even in walking distance.
The breakfast buffet was very good and quite cheap at 7.5 EUR/pax. Free wi-fi is available throughout the hotel. The system will ask you to register with an email address and password, but you can use pretty much anything that looks like an email address, it is not verified afterwards.
The only dark point in our stay was the availability of the parking garage, which is announced on their website but operated by a different company and therefore cannot be booked in advance. However, there is a parking lot next door that solved our problem for a little bit more than the underground garage would have cost.
Otherwise we enjoyed every bit of this hotel and will probably come back in the future.

Room Tip: Triple rooms are twins with a sofa bed, beware!
