“No luxury hotel with terrible internet”
Reviewed 31 March 2014 via mobile

My family and I stayed there 26 March till 30 March 2014, we excepted one luxury hotel but there was a good but no luxury. The staffs are not enough and not helpful, the internet is the worst thing in there, even we wanted pay the high speed internet , but the connection had many problem. The front desks explained sorry we have many guest and no any help??????
The steam bath did not have any steam!!! And in fitness room you can not find any dumbbell more than 5 kg and no barbell.
No staff even bellboy never say hello when guests enter or ....
It was my first and last stay there.

I stayed in this hotel for couple of days. The good part about this hotel is its location and cleanliness.
The look and feel of a room is none other than a room from a 3 star hotel. Bathroom does not have any special characteristic of a 5 star hotel. Very cheap tiles fitted on the walls. All cheap material used. Nothing designer or fancy or eye-catchy.
If you do not know German then to watch TV you need to pay. All TV channels are in German except 1 news channel. If you surf from one channel to another a glimpse of porn is shown in between and then comes a screen showing something like 'to watch a movie pay 12 Euros'. I don't remember the exact amount. Especially when you have children with you it is a matter to consider.
Free internet is very very bad. It is so slow that to open a website it took 2 to 3 minutes. For high speed internet 8 euros is the charge for 24 hours.
I did not find my bed that good. Very hard mattress.
No clock anywhere in the room.
BAF (Restaurant) is good.
Breakfast is good too and the service is also very good.
Overall it is definitely a good hotel to stay but looking at the rooms I may not call it as a 5 star hotel.

Our stay during the Christmas holidays could not have been better. The staff was polite and spoke excellent English. Our every need was attended to. Our room was on the camel and was very quiet and well appointed. Chocolates and Christmas cake were a nice touch. Internet service was very good, beds were great. Even though wew travel in Europe a lot, we still are trying to get used to Duvee's.
The restaurant was excellent, review in restaurant section. We did not try the breakfast buffet which looked excellent but was more food and expense then we needed. A small pastry shop was 2 blocks away and was fine.
Overall top hotel, highly recommended.

Room Tip: The canal rooms are quiet.

Very well situated within walking distance of Hamburg centre. Large clean rooms and bathroom, as expected from a 5-star hotel.
Hotel staff are very friendly, extremely helpful and accommodating.
The breakfasts are simply delicious, with a huge selection of delicious options.

I have stayed in the Steigenberger for some time because the price was uncompetitive and there were better alternatives, on this occasion the price was right. You realise when staying there how convenient it is for business meeting as majority are in walking distance. Staff very cooperative and efficient, rooms functional and well appointed. The lobby bar is looking tired and probably requires a revamp. The restaurant facilities were not experienced this time. Yes I would go back if price is competitive because of location.

Well laid out rooms, spacious and extremely cordial guest service. Try out the restaurant BAF which serves some extremely nice dishes. Ask for Vijay Kataria.. who came to our help when we wanted a vegetarian dish and went out of the way to get the chef to cook up some vegetables not in the menu. This service ensures we stay at Steigenberger next when we are in Hamburg

Having read a few comments about this place decided that the bad ones which were very few were just pathetic niggles . I usually put the +'s & -'s into two groups but I can't put any -'s down for this place .
The bathroom was what you would expect from a 5* place and minibar , telly - ah just one then for the tea making gang - no tea/coffee making facilities in the room - just fizzy water , disgusting !
If you are desperate for a cuppa then they do an english tea in the hotel - wife says it's good stuff - well worth the €5.90 - a pot that holds two cups .
The staff were great - wi-fi in the hotel lobby - free - in the room it will cost you . If you are desperate for the connection to the outside world then there are plenty of cafes around for free . €28 each for breakfast - ouch ! Get to the local places - miles cheaper .
Now the area and cafes/pubs .
As you turn right after coming out of the front revolving door you will be in a little square . On your left is the place we went for breakfast which is called Erste Liebe and has a "Martini " sign over the entrance . Good here for yoghurt, fruit, granola, latte, cakes, toasted sarnis, fresh orange/grapefruit/carrot - tea is darjeeling or earl grey . They speak good english as we are all too bone idle to learn german ! Cost €10 - €20 per couple - good stuff .
Never went into the "Marinehof" but the place was busy .
Opposite there is a pub/restaurant - they don't mind if you just want a beer .This is Rheinische Republik - nice bar . for €26 you can get a tray of drinks - the menu says " pay for 12 get 13" - 200ml glasses . . One thing I will tell you - after a few beers caught something out of the corner of my eye . When we all looked closer it was a couple of mice ! Well I said to the waitress in a type of charades sign language and she said - yes i know . Well another night we went in - drinks only I might add , and saw two more - well the beer was ok .Mice said the food was yummy and they would definitely come here again .
If you want to walk around , the Reeperbahn is worth a visit . It's a laugh walking round - plenty of pubs - not cheap - as this is the world renowned porno area of Hamburg . Lit up at night , rather like Blackpool - but as I said to the wife - we have to go to see if it's all true - well that's my excuse ! This is about 20 minutes walk ( stroll) . Went in a few pubs and they were smoking at the bar - just like the seventies !
There are plenty of museums down by the docks which are massive - the Spice museum and tea museum .
If you take a left as you come out of the hotel you will hit Starbucks , if that's your thing - but we stick to the local stuff - more of a laugh seeing what they eat .If you carry on in this direction you will hit the posh shops and the edge of the dock .
On the whole the hotel is in a brilliant position to go in either direction - you are pretty central for everything .
One point - do not go on the boat trip unless you speak pretty good german - they will tell you it's in English but it's not - waste of time - you live and learn .
To get to the hotel - After landing go down one flight of stairs and you will see the ticket machines - they take notes , €3 each , take the green S1 line which terminates at Wedel - you get off at Stadthausbrücke and the hotel is a one minute walk - simples !
I would definitely book here again - brilliant hotel .

Room Tip: Heard the police sirens/trams now and then as we had a room at the front - a room at the back might...
