We stayed a weekend at this boutique hotel in Hamburg. Glad we foundation it, since THE architect did not find it necessary to add a hotel sign visible from THE street. THE rooms are perfect but for the lack of place for a real suitcase. Beds are perfect, beautifully equipped rooms, toileteries tasteful and to top THE bathlinnen which we also bought (Move) was heavenly. The breakfast / brunch was a delight and THE service absolute excellent. We'll be definitely back!

Near perfect it almost makes me cry in joy. THe location is superb, the stuff is courteous and helpful. The room is chic and clean ... if only the brekkie was free it'd be 100% perfection

Room Tip: keep smiling and Danka all the time

Location is good. Close to city center and main shopping area. Airco did not work. It was 32° Celcius outside ! Due to automatic registration of the drinks token from the minibar there is no possibility to keep any food (sandwich) cool. Design furniture is nice to look at, but certainly not practical and not user friendly in a hotel. This should be advertised as a 4 stars hotel. Definitely not as a 5 stars.

The SIDE Hotel in Hamburg is very centrally located, which is probably it's best feature. It is very handy to get around Hamburg from here by public transport (buses, and train station is very close) - and by foot (you can walk to practically all of the major sites and attractions from this hotel - the Congress Center, the gardens, lakes, Harbour, shopping areas, town centre, train stations, tourist buses, etc). The hotel is in a side street - off the main road, so although it is very centrally located, it is in fairly quiet surrounds. At the time of my stay, there was building construction next door, but I never once heard any noise from the site during my stay. The hotel itself is a typical of a really good 3-star or average 4-star hotel; I can't say that I saw anything special in it's service or decor (I have stayed in MANY hotels around the world - this one doesn't leave a special impression on me at all, and is definitely not 5-star). The room itself (i stayed in a Superior Room) was relatively spacious, but felt very 'clinical' (practically white all over with shiny/plastic-looking furniture). The mattress on the bed was fairly hard, whilst the pillows (large European pillows) were soft but very flat (I needed two pillows to sleep on, and I usually prefer to sleep fairly flat). Unlike most other 5-star hotels, there were no spare pillows in the room (only 2x large pillows on the bed, and a couple of small, child-size neck cushions), and no option to request additional or alternative pillows. The linen on the bed was disappointing; although very clean, it was not the 'hotel' quality you would expect in most 4 or 5-star hotels (quite hard, felt like it was a bit 'starched'); very far from luxurious. The decorative cushions and blanket on the bed also showed signs of wear - zipper falling apart, stained in parts, and quite dusty. The room also did not have any of the following: tea or coffee maker (although the websites say it does - apparently, this is only in certain rooms); iron and ironing board (can't be requested either). The amenities are very basic. Cable TV was available, although the only English language channels were the news channels (CNN, BBC, etc); most channels were obviously German, with a speckling of some international language channels. I actually did not enjoy sitting in the room itself - the chairs were uncomfortable, and so was the bed, and it felt too clinical (although, I did sleep reasonably well on most nights). Additionally, it is difficult to adjust the temperature control in the room - it was often too cold or too warm; there is a thermostat controller in the room, but using it is not intuitive (logically, it feels that you should press the "+" button to increase the temperature (for heating), and the "--" button to decrease the temperature (for cooling), but it doesn't seem to work that way (and there are no instructions in the room to explain). One other thing to be aware of is that if you are light-sleeper, you may get woken by the noise in adjacent rooms; half of the room (where the bed is) is covered with carpet, but the other half is wooden flooring (the part where the most amount of 'traffic' occurs is wooden). This means that you can hear all of the footsteps in neighbouring rooms, especially when people are wearing hard-soled shoes, and when the cleaners are working. The bathroom was a good size, and had a good-size bath, shower over the bath (although the shower head didn't give a good pressure spray - never felt like enough water was coming through, especially to rinse your hair after shampooing), and separate toilet cubicle (toilets are a bit oddly shaped). As there were no shower curtains or shower screens, there was always some minor flooding on the bathroom floor after taking a shower (had to lay down towels so that I could walk across the floor without getting feet wet). The amenities in the bathroom were also quite basic - the toiletry supplies, the toilet paper, and the towels were all of very basic standard (definitely not 5-star). There were only large bath towel and hand towels provided (these were reasonably soft), there were no small face-cloths provided. On a few occasions, the towels supplied showed signs of significant wear and tear - with lots of obvious fraying at the edges (not 5-star). I was also not a fan of the glass sink and basin area - it always looked unclean after using it. There is an in-room safe (requires a credit card to swipe it closed and open - I couldn't get it work in any case), and mini-bar. The wardrobe has a good number of coat-hangers in it, but is too short to hang any long items (too short for long dresses, or longer coats), and there is no extra space to put away luggage or larger bags (hand luggage) - if you put your suitcase into the cupboard, you won't have any real space for your clothes to hang. As for breakfast - the venue was quite pleasant, and there was plenty of space - it had a nice ambience to it. A small buffet is offered - but, there was a good range of food items (e.g., cereals, fruits, small meats, cheeses, breads and pastries, juices, etc, etc), and everything seemed fresh (the selection of freshy bread rolls was especially nice). In regard to hot breakfast items, you can order these at your table (it's still within the one price you pay for breakfast - 23 euro - and, I agree that it is over-priced) - but the choice of hot breakfast is limited - mostly eggs in 4 different ways (fried, scrambled, poached, omelette), and pancakes with maple syrup.. and - I forget the other item. I had the eggs on most mornings, which were fine (but nothing special, and didn't live up to my expectations of hot breakfasts from other 4 and 5-star hotels). The service is also a bit inconsistent from day to day, in that the staff tend to forget your specific orders - eg they forget to bring you milk with your tea, they forget what you did or didn't want in your omelette, and the breakfast is not cooked in the same way, etc. Having said that, I found the staff to be generally very friendly, approachable, and very helpful. However, on check-in, the information offered is very limited - you have to ask for everything and about everything - it is not offered to you upfront (e.g., where breakfast is located, what services are available, maps, etc). I didn't have any trouble getting the information once I asked, but was a bit surprised to have to ask for all of it. There is also very limited information provided in the folder in the room. I did not use the hotel's wifi (after reading the other reviews), nor the SPA (ran out of time). I did go up to the terrace area - the inside lounge space is probably the most interesting part of the hotel in terms of decor (have a look), but I never once saw anyone up here. The view from the terrace is also nothing special, but probably nice to sit on on a warm, sunny day. Overall, I had a pleasant stay, which was more on the level of a good 3-star hotel or average 4-star hotel, and doesn't live up to the quality I have experienced in many 4-star hotels, or any 5-star hotels. Definitely over-priced and over-rated (although friendly and pleasant) ... if you have extra cash on your hands and the location is the most important aspect of your stay, then you might consider staying here. If you have stayed in other 5-star hotels, you will be disappointed.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on Level 7- function center is above

Really not a great hotel. Very design conscious and it certainly looks nice - but there is very little behind the facade. In particular the level of service is very inconsistent and I got the real impression that they did not care if I enjoyed my stay or not. For example...

- safe in the room is electronic and activated by credit card, this did not work and when I complained I was told I'd have to keep my valuables on me (didn't even offer someone to come look at it)

- my wake up call didn't come - luckily I also set my mobile alarm but being let down on a basic like this is appalling. When I mentioned it I was told I'd probably set it wrong!

- the air conditioning in the room could not be turned down and was set at a too warn 22.5C - when I phoned to ask for help I was told that I'd probably tried to change it wrong and to make sure that my room key was in the slot (as per most hotels). I explained it was and was told that it probably wasn't and to try again. When I complained a second time they sent someone up, who proceeded to take the key in and out again and then say I'd just have to open a window. The controls had visible tool marks on them, like someone had previously prized open the panel - so I guess they've had complaints about this room before but have failed to fix it

- room service was nice, nice food but I dialled the number to ask for the plates to be removed as requested and despite being told they were on the way no one turned up. I put my tray outside the door and it as still there in the morning

- I requested a second pillow and was told one would be brought right up - had to chase this twice and still nothing appeared

Internet is €21 for 24 hours which seems much higher than other hotels (I stay in international standard hotels 3-5 nights a month for work)

The bed is very uncomfortable and the pillows are very, very thin so you have no support for your head. The toilet is very trendy looking but is higher than standard from the ground and had a very deep lip - meaning that it's actually quite impractical and not easy to sit on.

Very nice hotel but a bit overprized. Service is fine and the rooms are big and clean. Internet should be free when you pay this much, but you get 3 hours for free, which is okay. You dont wanna miss their restaurant [m]eatery. Excellent meat.
