“Outstanding location and good rooms but fluctuating service”
Reviewed 26 November 2013

Very central location and very fresh rooms, albeit with some odd and over-designed bathroom details. High class meat restaurant inhouse. Reception and conference staff were, however, either absent or at least a bit absent minded at times.

Great business hotel. Comfortable bed, big room, good minibar, good restaurant, friendly staff, good location, close to city center. Only negative thing was the light switches; too difficult to figure out. Sometimes trying to be too funky doesn't pay off. Will come again next September on business for sure.

Good central location

Hip and trendy design, features and overall aesthetic will appeal to style conscious and maybe younger clientele

The food was particularly good at breakfast however €24 euro each day was rather steep!

The gym and pool are contemporary but not for any serious exercise with limited gym equipment

Staff were friendly and efficient and everyone spoke English too

I would choose the Sofitel versus this venue however my tastes are more old world whereas this hotel is uber chic

We stayed here for a weekend, from October 18 to 20.
From the moment we arrived until we checked out this was a perfect hotel, both when it comes to service, rooms, and location.

Breakfast is expencive but well worth the money, excellent food and drinks. Also great that breakfast lasts until 2 o'clock on saturdays and sundays, so you will be able to have breakfast no matter how long you sleep in the comfortable beds.

Also they offer late checkout on sundays for free (until 8 in the evening)

The room was very good size, bed was very good, the room had shower and bathtub, also shower gel, shampoo, creams and very soft and big towels.

Location is great, walking distance to downtown, casino, trainstation and harbor.

The hotel also have a pool and spa, but we didn't try it this time
Would absolutely stay here again!!

Room Tip: Room on the top floor

5* - Great reception staff and concierge - all really helpful; location excellent - perfect for Opera, shopping and business;
4* - Rooms - quirky lighting system, shutters on windows seemed to be outside our control and randomly went up at 1700hrs on Friday (is this a planning issue for the building opposite) - comment based on 3rd floor regular room. Lack of control meant no way of shutting out street light (although did not really bother me) Internal design of hotel public areas excellent.
3* - Bathroom design - shower over bath needed careful adjustment - a wetroom with shower only would be better. Loewe "entertainment system" - had no obvious connection for iPod (and no docking station.
2* - toilet design - another writer spoke of the mediaeval commode design - but the real issues is the sliding frosted glass door which offers no real privacy.
We did not try breakfast which at 24 Euro each seemed a little pricey - there aare lots of excellent local alternatives. Our only (bad) experience of the restaurant was for dinner - see separate review, as it is a separate franchise.
Just really did not quite work for us. OK but not "wow"!

There's no denying that this hotel is in a great location. It's proximity to the business district and the pretty Binnenalster lake/river was extremely useful for my business trip.

However, that second quintessential necessity for a business trip - the internet - was woefully inadequate. It simply didn't work most of the time, the rest of the time it was so slow it was tedious. Really not what you'd expect from a 5* hotel, especially when this has been repeatedly flagged to them here on Trip Advisor.

The decor was very impressive, a very high-end concept design. However, there were a few design features that some may find surprising, these include:

* Glass Shower Walls - Not for the modest, but a plus for the exhibitionist, parts of the shower wall are made of glass, and those using the facilities will be in view of the bedroom.

* Shower Over-Spray - The shower head is mounted on the ceiling, and there's a giant opening to the side of the bath. Result? Water. Everywhere. Every day.

* Commode-Like Toilet - The shape / style of the toilet reminded me of a medieval commode.

* Unfathomable Light Controls - On / off is the easy bit, but mastering which lights come on in which combination with the numerous switches is a feat best left to rocket scientists.

One final note on the facilities. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, there is no true AC in the rooms. There is a fan control, which can be turned up / down - but to be honest, it didn't seem to make any difference. Now, the room was not unbearably hot / cold, so it wasn't a huge issue... but I still expect better from 5*!

Would I stay there again? Yes, it's my employer's prefered hotel. But I will probably be spending a decent amount of time in Starbucks for some decent internet access!

After reading other tripadvisor reviews, we stayed at the Side Hotel Hamburg for a long weekend in October 2012.

Location – excellent location in the centre of Hamburg very close to the waterfront, shops and restaurant

Rooms – very nice (average sized) modern rooms

Food – you must have the breakfast here. Its not cheap (almost €20) but is easily one of the best hotel buffet breakfasts I have had.

Other – valet parking on arrival. Spa facilities are small but very clean and modern
