“Old Masters worth seeing”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

The Breughel collection alone is worth the visit (there are nine of them!). They have a fair photo policy and lighting on most pictures adequate for amateur photographers. Only down side (and it is a big one for older people like myself - mid-70s) is that gallery should have seats available in all galleries so one can study the art without discomfort.

“This is a must-see!”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

Never leave Hamburg without visiting this museum. Lots to see, old and new. Easy to find just behind Hauptbahnhof. You can also buy coffee/ tea and cakes. But go to the railwaystation for lunch!

“Good quality art gallery”
Reviewed 28 April 2014

Overall a good quality art gallery where there is alot to see and has the highlights and masterpieces of Casper David Friedrich paintings (though Dresden has a better range).

“Good way to spend a rainy day”
Reviewed 4 April 2014

I found the Kunsthalle a bit confusing: I went specifically to see the Caspar David Friedrich paintings & it took a bit of time to actually locate them. They were in the 'old' building - but you have to enter via a tunnel from the 'new' building. None of the rooms seem to be numbered, even though the gallery plan had allocated numbers to different rooms. There's not a huge collection, but they seem to have representations from most of the modern artists. I didn't check out the old masters section as I'm not really interested in that. Stopped off for refreshment at The Cube restaurant: service wasn't particularly speedy but the prices weren't TOO outlandish.

“Must for Friedrich Lovers”
Reviewed 21 March 2014

19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, generally considered the most important German artist of his generation Caspar David Friedrich's many masterpieces can be seen here. Lots of interesting work from German expressionism era, Otto Dix, Kokoshka... A big room of pre-raphaelites, as well. Huge space. Lots of room, galleries, set two hours aside. I could not find any contemporary art, perhaps because of the layout (underground pass that lead to another building, which we were told was closed.) Go bask in the art!
