We visited hamburg to celebrate my boyfriends 30th. He's a huge beatles fan and we had our hopes pinned on Stephanie's tour to round off a perfect week. She did not disappoint. So charming and bubbly and she really knew her stuff! We definitely recommend the tour if you're visiting hamburg!

This is a review of Stefanie Hempel's Original Beatles-Tour.

There are a number of Beatles tours in Hamburg but I saw the leaflet for this tour in the tourist office in the Central Station arcade and booked the next day. The image of the very smiley-eyed lady strumming a ukelele was too intriguing to pass up. The leaflet trumpets Stefanie as Hamburg's number one expert on everything Beatles and she's the first port of call for TV and radio when a Beatles consultant is needed.

It turned out that I had chosen very wisely.

You meet Stefanie at the entrance of the Feldstrasse U-bahn at 6pm on Saturday. It seems pricey at €25 but I felt I definitely got my money's worth.

An issue cropped up before the tour I had joined got underway as it turned out I was the only non German there and there were about 20 of us. Although Stefanie conducts her tours in both German and English, as I was outnumbered 19 to one, she explained that she would do the main tour in German but give me the English translation between locations. I was quite happy with this. Stefanie was so charming she could have told me in Urdu and I would've lapped it up.

Stefanie's USP was that every now and then she would whip out a little ukelele and sing a Beatles tune. She started the tour off with a lovely rendition of In My Life.

Although a Beatles fan for nearly 30 years now, my knowledge of the Hamburg facts was a bit hazy and hearing about them from another passionate Beatles fan and seeing the actual places where The Beatles honed their skills was a fantastic experience.

One of the highlights was being taken to the doorway where John Lennon had that famous photo taken of him which was used for his 1975 Rock and Roll album.

We then traversed the infamous Reeperbahn which was getting into full swing but we felt safe with Stefanie and her ukelele. She sang Rock and Roll music in the door way of the Kaiserkeller while we sang along. All the time being watched by various groups of amazed stag parties and hen-doos!

The tour then finished off in the original Indra club where The Beatles played first with a set of around six or seven Beatles songs sung by Stefanie while she played a guitar. This took me by surprise and it was a great way to round off a wonderful tour by singing along with Stefanie and the rest of the group in the actual Indra club!

This was a great experience and I can't recommend it enough. Stefanie Hempel is one of those people who lights up the world with her presence and to have been guided around the Beatles' Hamburg by her was a privilege.
