I have been to very many high-quality and exciting hotels during the past 15 years, so I have a fairly high threshold to call a hotel "simply amazing", but this hotel does deserve this recognition.
First of all, this hotel is extremely stylish. You feel like walking into a modern, cozy wonderland where only the imagination has been the limit when designing the interiors of the hotel. This applies to all parts of the hotel from the public facilities and lobby area all the way to the rooms. Also, the musical world of the hotel is very much consistent with the style and overall atmosphere of the hotel.
Of course, one cannot ignore the basic qualities of the hotel experience. The quality of food and drinks was very high. The buffet breakfast was amazing in terms of overall quality, freshness, and variety. The staff was mostly very friendly and helpful. There were a couple of occasions where I could not quite say whether the service I received was slightly impolite or whether it was a matter of language skills of a staff member. Overall, surprisingly many Germans speak relatively weak English, so this might explain it.
I fully understand that kidney-like sinks in the rooms, special lighting, beds in the middle of a room do generate mixed reactions. However, I liked this. The functionality and practicality of the rooms had not been sacrificed to the efforts of trying to be different.
The sleep quality was excellent. Our room faced the inner courtyard, and was located at the end of the corridor - far away from the hotel's popular (and very cool) nightclub. The silence was guaranteed. The bed was super comfortable.
Those of you who want your hotel to be located at the heart of the city center, this hotel might not be a perfect choice. East Hotel is located two blocks away from Reeperbahn. The Simon-von-Utrecht-Strasse, at which the hotel is located, is a fairly boring street, but there are a number of nice restaurants, cafes, and shops in the neighborhood. You can walk to the city center of Hamburg, but this takes a fair amount of time. Taking a taxi is a more viable option, and it does not cost a lot.
All in all, a great experience. Highly recommended for those of you who have become very or even slightly tired of those boring chain hotels and want to have something very more special and different.
