“Under the Elbe”
Reviewed 28 June 2014

one of the tunnels is being renovated, but you can get down and walk or use a bike the get thou.
On the other side, you have a good view of the Landungsbruecken, well worth it.
Also in the summer the tunnel is nice and cool.

“Wonderful piece of living history”
Reviewed 22 June 2014 via mobile

The view down the shaft is quite something. Easy lift down and smooth walk through the tunnel. Full of history some great fish art and one gory set of tiles with a leg and rats, working out the story behind that. Watch out for bikes in middle section, fast. Great view of Hamburg on other side. Not sure some modern cars could get through.

“A disappointment”
Reviewed 19 June 2014

The tunnel is being refurbished. It is still open but much is covered / dirty. The staff on duty were unhelpful.

“Blast from the Past!”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

The Alter Elbtunnel must have been quite an engineering feat of its time.It is a pedestrian/ vehicle tunnel, made in 1911, that connects central Hamburg with the shipyards on the other side.It runs 80 feet under the river Elbe and is more than a 1000 feet long. The tunnel is rather plain and functional, barring a few fish related decorations on its walls. One has to walk in single file on the footpath. It was my first experience walking through a tunnel and therefore exciting.Four huge lifts carry people, bikes, cars up and down from the tunnel level or one could take the stairs up /down, which are spiral and spooky, although some super fit daily commuters seemed to make short work of it.The stair well looks like something out of an early spy thriller!

The views from the other side of the Hamburg city skyline is very good, although, there isn't much else in the area.We went in the evening and loved the twinkling city lights on the other side. This is a free, fantastic and unique activity that you could do with the kids.Although, the tunnel is sign posted in the 'Landing Bridges' area, we found it a bit harder to find its entrance. The entrance is in the circular building, just off Landungsbrucken. I recommend going just before dusk or in the evening, when the view from the other side is more dramatic.
