Really typical German hotel, functional and clean. Rooms sort of basic but have everything you need - but what is it with those quilt duvets, would prefer sheets myself. Room bottled water nearly €5!!! Lidl convenience store across road. Breakfast choice reasonable. Nothing special really so not great for luxury or romantic break but overall was satisfied with value for money.

Fre lobby internet access/printing on 3 PCs which was a surprise

Rooms not ready at 2 pm, but amazingly upgarded rooms available at extra €10 pppn, Hmmm.

Don't be too put off by red light area reports, fairly harmless and no signs of hustling. very close to train station although street scruffy but safe.

Beware the reception recommendations for restaurants (no concierge), twice way off what we wanted.

Room Tip: Research restaurants yourself, dont use hotel ideas

As a birthday present for my girlfriend and I booked the Rubin as a Top Secret Hotel find through lastminute.com and after checking reviews on here was able to figure out that it was this hotel.

First off with regards to the 'the hotel is in the St Georg red light district'. To be honest we didn't even notice it - it would only be a problem if you are extremely prudish or if you are a little old-fashioned. The walk between the hotel and the main train does have some sex shops on it, but they are pretty innocuous with no 'lucky-lucky men' pestering you to enter.

The aforementioned walk between the hotel and the station is not long, and within a few more minutes you are at the Rathaus and then the port area.

The hotel was very clean and comfortable with typical German efficiency, there is free Wi-Fi throughout and there are three PCs and a printer downstairs which guests can use at their leisure.

Breakfast wasn't included in our deal I can't comment on that, we just bought food from the Lidl across the road. The room was comfortable and warm despite the temperature outside not rising above freezing for the duration of our stay. The sleep quality of the bed was excellent.

I'd definitely recomment the Rubin - pleasant staff and a good location for younr visitors.

My husband and I spent a long weekend in Hamburg in February 2011. It rained without stopping for three whole days and the Arcotel Rubin provided a great escape from the rain when our sense of humour was failing us.

Our room was comfortable, clean and quiet and although we were situated beside the elevator it didn't disturb us. The addition of tea and coffee making facilities in the room would have made it perfect, but there is a cafe and a bar in the hotel, both of which are excellent. The staff were always friendly and helpful, even printing off our boarding cards for the return journey when the printer in the lobby ran out of ink.

The train from the airport stops at Lohmuelen Strasse which is right beside the hotel so is really handy. The hotel itself is located on Steindamm which is the red light district of St Georg. There are a few sex shops and working girls between the hotel and the train station and it is a bit seedy but this isn't really a problem as Lange Reihe can be used as an alternative route into town (the walk to the Rathaus takes around 15 mins). Lange Reihe also has some great coffee shops and restaurants and we would highly recommend Cafe Uhrlaub and Cafe Balzac both of which are located at the end of Danziger Strasse. The train station is also a good tip for picking up a snack quite cheaply.

We really loved Hamburg (even though we both caught a cold!) and would highly recommend both the city and Arcotel Rubin.

The room was very good - clean, the bed comfortable, and decent curtains so the early morning sun didn’t kill off some well needed sleep. I wasn’t bothered by the street noise, but I was high enough up and not facing the street so this was never really a concern. The staff was very helpful in helping locate a few addresses for me, and also seemed pretty knowledgeable about the standard questions that out-of-towners would ask. Being so close to the centre of Hamburg, I never tested the bar, but it was well frequented by a few of the business groups that were staying / meeting there at the time.

The location is very good. You are about 10mins walk to the Hauptbahnhof, and only a couple of underground stations from the Rathaus. The one potential problem is that there is a bit of a red-light district nearby (between Hauptbahnhof & Hotel) so for people who like to avoid this kind of area, I suggest walking to the other UBahn stop (Lohmülenstrasse, I think) to get to where you’re going.

Really excellent hotel about 5 minutes from the main station, however, there is a nearer metro stop called Lohmulenstrasse. The staff are friendly and speak very good English. The rooms are a nice size, very very clean. Hotel in a very central area with good transport links.Would most definitely stay here again!

We had a great stay at this hotel. Double room that was upgraded upon arrival. I already thought we were getting a good deal, but this was definitely a plus. As was the free low-speed internet to check our emails, etc.

Rooms
The double room they gave us was big, bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious and well-lit (the infrared light -soft red light & some heat- was a nice touch). No complaints here. I also appreciated the tea making facilities + apples left for us each day.

Spa
I loved it. I always try to book hotels with at least a sauna, but this was simply wonderful. The rain showers and different saunas/steam bath were lovely and the relaxation area very comfortable. I didn't try the gym equipment, but the Power Plate required extra payment - not nice.

Location
Be warned: yes, it is an area full of sex shops and prostitutes (much like most of Hamburg's city centre). But I never felt unsafe: everyone minded their own business and the area seemed simply "ugly", not dangerous at all. It's also a short walk from the main station, which is a plus if you're planning to move around.

I'd definitely come back to this hotel.

I have nothing bad to say about this hotel. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was absolutely spotless, the location was great (only 10 mins walk from the central station and 5 mins walk to Lange Reihe which has loads of great restaurants and bars) and breakfast was lovely. Loads of tempting food and drink to choose from and even bottles of prosecco if you're in the mood for it! We had a drink in the bar one night which was expensive but nice, didn't try the restaurant. We had room service breakfast one of the days which was huge, very good value! They gave us a slice of cake with a candle upon check-out for my boyfriend's birthday and there were free apples in the room, small nice touches. They do have a smoking floor so if you need a non-smoking room you're probably best to specify in advance. There is a gym and sauna on the 7th floor which seemed pretty good although we didn't use it. I felt very safe in the area of the hotel (St Georg) and in Hamburg as a whole, people everywhere were very friendly.
